Working at Monitor Deloitte – first year insights into strategy consulting

I have the privilege to launch a series of blog posts by Monitor Deloitte where our strategy consulting professionals will address a variety of strategy consulting topics. When I started working at Monitor Deloitte in August 2018, I had absolutely no clue about the future journey I would have ahead. Currently I am very satisfied I trusted my instincts and jumped into the unknown. Let me tell you about my most important insights so far.

Strategy consulting falls under the professional services industry and is characterized by high knowledge intensity. This means the cornerstone of our business is the expertise of our people. I am grateful I have been given many chances to develop both my personal and professional skills at Monitor Deloitte by participating in various courses, ranging from hard strategy consulting topics to presentation skills. We have a coaching and mentoring culture at Deloitte, which means that a senior employee guides me during my journey and I feel Deloitte invests in me. By developing the skills of each individual employee, we become more marketable and useful members of the project teams.

Project-orientated work differs a lot from my previous experience. The duration of my typical project assignment ranges from one month to three months. My client, as well as my project team, will change over time. I have found this quite instructive as I have been forced to learn and understand different industries and their value creation mechanisms, ranging from B2B industrial companies to B2C financial services companies. Additionally I have had the chance to take different roles (sometimes outside my comfort zone) in the projects: strategy advisor, financial management professional, facilitator, business model specialist, and many more. Changes in project teams have offered me a chance to widen my way of thinking while simultaneously learning the best practices and gaining in-depth knowledge from my wonderful and wise colleagues.

Consulting is people business. One important lesson in working life is about the different personal preferences people have regarding their way of working. Deloitte has designed a Business Chemistry test to provide insights about individuals’ and teams’ behavior patterns based on observable traits and preferences, which eventually makes project team building easier. The test categorizes people into four different profiles: pioneers, drivers, integrators, and guardians. I have noticed that it is easier to work with people who have the same mindset as I do, but it is definitely more rewarding and eye-opening to work with a different profile to my own. The test also helps to build a complementary team by having people with different profiles and ways of working.

I encourage you to start observing the behavior of your colleagues and clients and try to form a deeper understanding of what really motivates them. It is definitely more rewarding to generate value-adding projects by focusing on the topics your client appreciates. I have three examples of what drives my motivation to do my best each day: collaborating and accomplishing superior results as a part of a team, doing meaningful high-impact work, and building up a trust relationship with clients.

Working as a strategy consultant at Monitor Deloitte has so far been the most rewarding year for me.
