Since Gibraltar is outside the EU Customs Union, yachts purchased in the EU by non-EU residents can use Gibraltar’s legislation to avoid paying VAT. The only requirement is that it is berthed in Gibraltar at least once every 18 months, and does not remain in Gibraltar for a period longer than 6 months.

The Gibraltar Ships Register’s status as a Category I Red Ensign Register means Gibraltar is bound by international conventions endorsed by the UK and is entitled to Royal Navy protection. This, together with a maritime legal system based on English Law, allows yacht owners to be confident in Gibraltar’s maritime structure.

The absence of VAT and customs duty on fuel in Gibraltar also means yacht owners are able to enjoy perhaps the lowest per-liter price of marine-fuel within the EU and with plenty of berthing spaces, Gibraltar is able to cater even for the latest super-yachts.

At Deloitte, we provide a ‘one-stop’ service for clients interested in yacht registration and administration, making use of our extensive local knowledge and established relationship with the Gibraltar Port Authority to provide a seamless and efficient service.
