Overview of Deloitte’s involvement in UNGA 2022

At Deloitte, we are committed to be a force for good and lead the way on the increasingly complex challenges society faces today. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), and the events surrounding this are an opportunity for Deloitte leaders to engage with others to discuss solutions and commitments to addressing some of the biggest global challenges, such as climate change and social equity. WEF Sustainable Development Impact Meetings

Hosted alongside UNGA, the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Sustainable Development Impact Meetings, convened WEF nature and climate communities, which included business leaders, policy-makers, international and civil society organizations, innovators and entrepreneurs.

Our delegation, participated in a series of impact-driven dialogues, these communities and alliances will use the meetings to advance their work and make concrete progress on the SDGs, and to build momentum towards other key milestones in the months ahead, including COP27 and the Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos in January 2023.

Deloitte’s participation on the WEF SDI program

The 1t.org and Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA) initiatives convene public, private and civil society leaders to discuss how to build resilience in forest conservation and restoration through net-zero and nature-positive collective action.

Despite the COP26 commitment of 145 countries to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030, loss has remained high and restoration progress is insufficient. What levers hold the greatest potential for achieving long-term forest resilience at scale through the unfolding climate crisis?

On the agenda:
  • Analyze impact-oriented solutions to protect, restore and fund forests
  • Share experiences and lessons learned
  • Align on credible, inclusive and impactful actions to be taken forward

The Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is the largest free trade area in the world, by area and number of participating countries. The AfCFTA, once fully implemented, will be the fifth-largest economy in the world, with the potential to have a combined GDP of more than $3.4 trillion. The Forum Friends of the AfCFTA convene to discuss how global business, in partnership with public sector leaders, can support the implementation of the trade act.

On the agenda:
  • Develop a common framework for how global business and public sector leaders can support implementation of the AfCFTA
  • Share insights on how the AfCFTA can enhance US-Africa commercial ties (including how the new US Sub-Saharan Africa Strategy impacts the trade pact) -Share insights on how the trade pact can enhance peace and security
    Align on a 2022-2023 Initiative roadmap

The Refugee Employment and Employability Initiative convenes to explore the tools, resources and partnerships needed to help your organization harness refugee talent. Recognizing the centrality of economic self-reliance to the successful integration of refugees in host countries, this meeting brings together CHROs, civil society leaders and government actors to accelerate progress on refugee employment and employability.

– Climate Governance Initiative – Accelerating Board Action for Net Zero

To deliver international climate goals, financial investments are required to drive the compensation and neutralization of carbon emissions. Disjointed governmental efforts have resulted in a range of approaches, driving uncertainty. In parallel, the corporate community is moving to concrete actions to realize net-zero commitments. There is a clear need to clarify how carbon markets fit into a meaningful net-zero strategy and how engagement with carbon markets could look. This gathering of business leaders, experts and government actors explores the critical role voluntary and compliance carbon markets play in delivering the international climate goals and the complexities facing the markets.

On the agenda:
  • Explore ways for carbon markets to deliver on international climate goals and reach net zero
  • Explore the role of voluntary carbon markets and complexities in engagement, including uncertainties in the market relating to regulatory issues
  • Outline a roadmap to address key issues in carbon markets

 – Climate Governance Initiative – The Chairperson’s Guide to a Just Transition

Deloitte, in association with the World Economic Forum, has prepared a briefing paper entitled, The Chairperson’s Guide to a Just Transition. The discussion will debate the paper, the just transition, why it is important to company strategy, and the role of chairs as stewards of the transition.

The guide provides practical questions for board members to ask executives to help steer the business towards a just transition and delivering sustainable growth.

 – Meeting of the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders

Members of the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders and representatives from government, business and international organizations gather to advance the agenda for corporate net-zero reporting, accountability and transparency. As the focus for COP27 shifts from net-zero pledges to measurable company-and country-level emission reduction results, how can we develop stronger and clearer standards for those pledges and ensure alignment with current systems?

On the agenda:
  • Shape the agenda for corporate net-zero standard setting and implementation
  • Troubleshoot key corporate bottlenecks in net-zero accountability and transparency, including Scope 3 emissions reporting
  • Drive greater coherence in net-zero standards and reporting, including alignment on key existing frameworks such as SBTi and global climate standards such as ISSB

– Nature and Climate Community Dinner

This special community dinner brings together global champions of nature and climate to inspire and trigger more rapid action through innovation and collaboration.

After three years of intensive virtual collaboration to integrate the Stakeholder Capitalism Metrics into ESG and sustainability reporting, this growing community of ESG practitioners meets for the first time in person. With nearly 200 companies supporting the metrics in our global coalition, this is a community gathering and networking opportunity for the ESG practitioners to convene and meet the new leadership of the International Sustainability Standards Board.

On the agenda:
  • Identify opportunities for global companies to support the global standard-setting alignment
  • Discuss priorities to achieve alignment and interoperability at international level
  • Explore steps needed to prepare key stakeholders and teams for reporting enhancements

– Launch of the First Movers Coalition Finance Pillar

The First Movers Coalition (FMC) meets to create powerful market demand signals for the technologies needed to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors by assembling world-leading companies to make ambitious purchasing commitments by 2030.

On the agenda:
  • Review Finance Pillar offerings and how demand and supply side needs are addressed
  • Identify gaps and how to tackle them through additional offerings
  • Analyze how to leverage the US Reduction Act of 2022 and further government sources to support FMC identified technologies

– Scaling Future Technologies through Sustainable Procurement

The First Movers Coalition chief procurement officers and government partners meet to discuss supplier engagement and procurement activities related to fulfilling coalition commitments as governments and companies focus on procuring environmentally sustainable materials to tackle the climate crisis. Participants also share suggestions for a 2023 CPO summit that will explore how to best mobilize green procurement and scale up future innovations to limit adverse environmental impact.

On the agenda:
  • Enable public-private cooperation by highlighting green procurement opportunities in all six sectors
  • Establish a community of chief procurement officers
  • Share analyses on supplier landscape and create opportunities to engage with leading suppliers of FMC-identified clean energy technologies

– Meeting of the Coalition for Women's and Girl's Health

The members of the Women’s Health Initiative convene a year after making commitments to accelerate and foster collaborations to enhance women’s and girls’ health. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed ongoing inequalities, with women and girls being the most neglected and abused by virtue of their gender.

What has been accomplished in the past year and what key challenges need accelerated action by the Steering Committee?

On the agenda:
  • Share updates and review achievements on selected coalitions
  • Jointly review the next steps needed to strengthen the objectives of each coalition
  • Introduce new champions and expand commitments

– Meeting of the Global Health Equity Network

The Global Health Equity Network gathers to explore how businesses across sectors can play a key role in achieving a global vision of zero health gaps by 2050. The pandemic, climate change and other global, social and economic crises have exacerbated long-standing inequities in health outcomes between and within countries. How can businesses take meaningful, sustainable action to address the drivers of health inequities in their workforce, offerings, communities and ecosystem?

On the agenda:
  • Introduce high-level, cross-industry commitments on integrating health equity into core strategies, operations and reporting
  • Review the strategies and tools needed for follow-through on high-level commitments
  • Explore how specific industries can expand and operationalize these commitments

– Meeting of the Distributed Vaccine Manufacturing Collaborative

The Distributed Vaccine Manufacturing Collaborative (DVMC) chaired by CEPI and the US Academy of Medicine aims to increase vaccine access for low-and middle-income countries through successful and sustainable establishment of a versatile global vaccine manufacturing network capable of producing vaccines during pandemic and non-pandemic times. Join us as we embark upon a multistakeholder process to achieve this goal.

On the agenda:
  • Review opportunities to engage policy and industry leaders in the DVMC
  • Identify the most promising solutions to counter future outbreaks and pandemics.

 – Mobilizing Blue Carbon Markets

The Ocean Action Agenda meets to accelerate blue carbon investment by finding solutions to the major challenges facing the developing blue carbon market. Aquatic ecosystems have the potential to store five times as much carbon per square foot as terrestrial ecosystems and are critical to livelihoods and biodiversity. How can we leverage this blue carbon potential to maximize quality, credibility, and equity?

On the agenda:
  • Identify the most promising opportunities for governments to create an enabling environment for blue carbon markets
  • Explore the most critical business, finance and technology levers to boost the blue carbon market
  • Align on the partnerships that will facilitate equitable blue carbon solutions

– Alliance for Social Entrepreneurs

The first community gathering of the Global Alliance for Social Entrepreneurship in the United States, Deloitte and the Schwab Foundation hosted 20+ Alliance members at the Deloitte 30 Rockefeller Plaza office location dedicated to building community and strengthening partnerships across the globe.

On the agenda:
  • Share a reflection on the Non-Financial Support work highlighting the outcomes of the past year
  • Convene members of the Global Alliance for Social Entrepreneurship over a candid discussion on the future of the Scaling and Partnerships cluster
  • Provide a space for Alliance members to forge meaningful relationships in-person with diverse colleagues

– Scaling Social Economy: Engaging Private and Public Sectors

In a critical year for advancing policies for social inclusion in the digital and green transitions, the Social Economy Working Group convenes to explore strategies for scaling the social economy, which places social and environmental impact at the center of economic activity.

Leading stakeholders also discuss how to align efforts on a more holistic impact approach that includes private and public sector actors fostering and strengthening social economies.

On the agenda:
  • Highlight the key role of the private sector in the social innovation ecosystem
  • Provide a platform for a multistakeholder collaboration to foster the social economy
  • Outline the objectives of the UN Resolution on Social and Solidarity Economy and the role private sector can play in broader support of the social economy

UpLink, the open innovation platform of the World Economic Forum, was launched to enable impact-driven initiatives and supercharge sustainability ambitions through innovation.

This breakfast, which brings together UpLink Top Innovators, kickstarts the UpLink program at the Sustainable Development Impact Meetings. In an informal atmosphere, Top Innovators have the opportunity to connect with one another, with investment funds that have joined the platform as well as UpLink's founding partners Deloitte & Salesforce and explore their ambitions for how innovation can achieve the 2030 Global Goals.

The UpLink Top Innovators, experts and leaders convene to co-design the future of water's innovation agenda. With one-fifth of the world's population already living in a stressed water basin – many of which are already being ravaged by droughts and heatwaves – and global demand for freshwater projected to exceed sustainable supply by 40% in 2030, the urgency to act is more pressing than ever.

What strategies and innovations can be scaled to preserve healthy, and resilient freshwater ecosystems around the world? What conditions need to be in place to help these solutions thrive and create lasting impact?

Speaking Engagement Highlights

Deloitte, Kaiser Permanente, and the World Economic Forum hosted an inspiring roundtable discussion with leaders from both health and non-health sectors to during climate week for Advancing Health and Health Equity through Climate Action. This allowed climate and health leaders to build dialogue on connecting the health sector, the private sector and community-based organizations on putting health and health equity at the center of climate change.

As part of Techonomy’s Health+Wealth of Our Planet forum, the Economist’s Global Energy & Climate Innovation Editor, Vijay Vaitheeswaran, moderates a panel discussion featuring Scott Corwin, Deloitte LLP’s Chief Strategy & Commercialization Officer Sustainability, Climate, & Equity Practice and other leaders on why adopting systems-based approaches are vital to realizing carbon emission targets.

The circular economy makes development sustainable by reducing waste, extending product life, and recirculating resources. Understanding and realizing that transformation starts with a broad view of the interconnected supply chain is the first step. Chris Ruggeri, Deloitte DTBA Advisory Principal; Dan Kinsella, Deloitte Consulting LLP Consulting Managing Director; and Naba Sengupta, Deloitte & Touche LLP Advisory Senior Manager dive into what this means and how it applies to critical systems during Nest Summit main stage conversation at the Javits Center.
