Life at Deloitte
Melissa Brown | New Zealand
Tell us about your career path at Deloitte (How long have you worked for Deloitte, how has your career evolved?)
As of September 2017, I have worked for Deloitte for 10 years, originally joining the Financial Advisory group in Ottawa, Canada as part of the Valuations team. We had a small team in Ottawa and, as a junior member of the team, I had the great opportunity to work in almost all areas of financial advisory. I have worked in corporate finance, valuation, restructuring and forensic work, just to name a few. For my first few years at Deloitte Canada, I was able to experience and change roles three times until I found my niche in Forensics. Now, I am a manager in forensics and am on a two-year secondment with Deloitte New Zealand gaining international experience.
What has been your favorite part of working for Deloitte?
My favorite part of working for Deloitte is the opportunities that I have been able to take advantage of—I’m in New Zealand with my family!—I would say that sums it up!!
What will stand out for you as the greatest benefit of working for Deloitte?
The greatest benefits of working for Deloitte are the two elements in my career path: I have been provided a place to grow both personally and professionally; and, I have traveled across the globe. It’s just really nice to know that there are other opportunities out there, whether it be within a member firm or mobility in our global network.
What is it about working for Deloitte that inspires you the most?
I find it inspirational to be part of such a well-recognized and well-respected brand. It embodies my personal values.
How has Deloitte invested in you as a leader, helping you grow?
Leaders along my career path have been such a key part of why I stay at Deloitte. We spend so many hours at work and with our co-workers and leadership team. We should all hope to work for people that we take inspiration from and makes us want to perform better. These are the types of leaders that I have worked with over the years at both Deloitte Canada and Deloitte New Zealand.
How do you feel that you have been able to make an impact while working at Deloitte?
I think that I have had the most impact on other team members around me during my time at Deloitte. I have always valued a healthy work-life balance and work really hard to help others find their balance, whatever that might be at any level.
List your proudest professional and personal achievements.
My proudest professional achievement came about one summer morning after months and months of hard work on a high-profile investigation. Our team was huddled around the television in the breakroom to hear a Canadian government official comment in a news conference that our team did a fantastic job. What a win for our little Ottawa Forensic team!
My proudest personal achievement is in the close knit family that I have been able to have while working full-time.
What is one thing that people might be surprised to learn about you?
I have been with my husband for 24 years. We became boyfriend and girlfriend when I was 13 years old and we have never separated. Throughout the years, we have had the opportunity to grow together, learn patience and understanding, as well as problem solve as a team. I count myself really lucky!
