Deloitte leverages own sporting talents to make an IMPACT in the lives of underprivileged youths at the new Singapore Sports Hub

Over 560 Deloitte volunteers work together to benefit Singapore’s local communities

SINGAPORE, 29 August 2014 – A record 563 staff from Deloitte Singapore are out across the island today participating in nine different activities to help improve the well-being and quality of life of the communities we work and live in. This day, known in Deloitte worldwide as IMPACT Day, is an annual celebration of Deloitte’s commitment to community investment.

Following the announcement of Deloitte’s sponsorship for the 28th SEA Games, Deloitte has made sport a key engagement tool in our outreach to the community. Some 90 students from NorthLight School (NLS) were given a tour of the newly minted Singapore Sports Hub and had the opportunity to play basketball, netball and table-tennis at the OCBC Arena with our some of Deloitte’s Team Singapore national athletes including Suhailah Kariman (Netball), Wynne Tang (Floorball), Sharlene Li (Basketball) and Angelyn Pang (Football). Ng Han Bin, Team Singapore Basketball Athlete, also made time amidst his packed training schedule to coach and share his sport experiences with the students.

As a firm supporter of “Youth and Education” causes, Deloitte is partnering with NorthLight School (NLS) for a third year to befriend and engage academically-challenged youths to help them develop their talent. This year, four different field trips were conducted for over 640 students, where they applied classroom concepts to a fun and exciting external environment at the Universal Studios Singapore, River Safari, Zoo and the newly opened Singapore Sports Hub.

Besides playing the role of a mentor and friend on this day, Deloitte has also been participating in other NorthLight School programmes such as their annual Sports Day, Great Outdoor Experience and their regular Co-Curricular Activities.

Emphasising the importance of IMPACT Day, Mr Philip Yuen, Chief Executive Officer of Deloitte Singapore said, “Creating real and measurable impact is at the core of what we do at Deloitte for our clients, our people and our communities. Since we started our Singapore operations back in 1967, we have built a rich heritage of actively engaging our communities in Singapore to make meaningful social impact. This year’s IMPACT Day, themed 'It starts with me', recognises the importance of an individual’s contribution and we have received overwhelming response from our people extending beyond our Youth and Education activities to championing other meaningful causes such as serving up meals for the needy, befriending the elderly and caring for the environment.” Mr Yuen was present at the Singapore Sports Hub, joining the children and staff of NorthLight School in the sports activities.

This year marks the third combined IMPACT Day for Deloitte Southeast Asia and over 6,300 people – in 23 office locations across Southeast Asia – will take a day out of the office to contribute their time and talent for the benefit of our communities alongside educators and non-profit leaders.

Other activities:

  • Deloitte has been organising social activities for the elderly at Tung Ling Community Services at Dakota Crescent since 2012. For the first time this year, 91 volunteers and 40 elderly went on an outing together to the Trick Eye Museum where they had an enjoyable time taking photos.
  • A dedicated group of 46 volunteers worked hard in the kitchen of Willing Hearts to prepare, cook, pack and deliver meals to needy residents around the island.
  • Another group of 130 volunteers also pursued environmental causes in two locations – maintaining the gardens and organic rooftop vegetable farm at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and joining the Waterways Watch Society to monitor, restore and protect the aesthetics of Singapore’s waterways in an environmental clean-up.
  • Another 40 volunteers participated in Project We Care Stop Bed Bugs @ Central Singapore, an initiative by People’s Association and Project We Care CEOs Network, a CEO-led volunteering network that encourages corporate volunteerism in Singapore. They spent the day at Redhill to help the low-income elderly residing in rental flats to improve their living conditions and eradicate bed bugs.
