Cooperation boosts supply chain resiliency in an uncertain future

Decades of supply chain optimisation have given way to supply chain fragility as nation’s supply chains were quietly accumulating massive risk. Natural disasters, grey zone threats, global pandemics, terrorist attacks, strategic competition from peer nations and other unexpected events could rapidly change defence supply chains. The inability and sometimes unwillingness of suppliers in the defence industry to illuminate supply chains makes it difficult to highlight vulnerabilities.

Globalisation has obscured thousands of sub-suppliers behind a veil of complexity, with the abstract supply chain risk assumed, often eclipsing defined cost savings achieved. Sharing supply chains with select allies can help boost resiliency in times of stress. Diversity of supply makes it more difficult for adversaries to disrupt them. Resilient and diverse supplies of critical electronic components, explosives, fuels, and active pharmaceutical ingredients among others will be critical to missions in times of disruption.

Recent macroeconomic trends have given rise to protectionism which has seen many countries apply trade dependencies as leverage over one another, fuelling a movement towards onshoring. A shortage of global supply and increased price volatility are driving a greater emphasis on adaptable operating models and resilient supply chains within the defence sector. This requires a reimagining of defence supply chains and involves embedding a strategic rather than a tactical mindset to create a resilient asset.
