Generating conversation and collaboration through our DCU Climate partnership

When it comes to driving large-scale change the best way to think differently is to think together. Last year we launched our corporate partnership with the Dublin City University (DCU) Centre for Climate and Society and we continue to connect people across business, academia and policy to significantly impact the climate crisis.

As the world’s largest professional services firm, Deloitte has a critical role to play in supporting organisations to positively impact climate change, and to achieve a sustainable future on a sustainable planet.

Last year, we announced our partnership with DCU to establish the DCU Centre for Climate and Society, Ireland’s first academic research centre devoted to leading societal responses to the climate crisis.

The firm has since supported the Centre in a range of research, projects, and education initiatives to think and talk about the climate emergency - connecting our people and clients with the latest climate research and providing opportunities for robust, solutions-focused collaboration on key topics. One of the highlights of the year was the second annual Climate and Society Conference, which focused on the increasingly crucial issue of biodiversity.

Opening the day, David Kinsella, Head of Risk Advisory at Deloitte Ireland, highlighted that:

Progress towards solutions requires collaboration across the entire ecosystem of private and public sector, as well as institutions and government organisations, across industries and across sectors.

Enabling this multifaceted approach to climate action is at the centre of our DCU partnership, with this unique event attracting over 300 attendees. It featured addresses from Minister for Environment Eamon Ryan, environmentalist and author Eoghan Daltun, as well as a host of panel discussions including media reporting and the evolution of climate policy.

The success of the Government’s Climate Action Plan is pivotal for Ireland, with fresh ideas and shared knowledge central to this transition. With this in mind, we joined with the DCU Centre to convene a special event as part of the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform’s Innovation Week. This brought together local and international experts to discuss best practice for the public sector.

These vital, lively conversations continued in many forms across the year, with a special webinar ahead of COP27, and a series of guest lectures for DCU students and Deloitte employees. Through our DCU collaboration we launched the Code Red podcast, which tackles some of the key issues around climate action with a range of guests.

Research is at the core of the Centre’s work and Deloitte continues to play an active role in developing this agenda, through its role on the Advisory Board for the Centre. Upcoming publications are focused on carbon budgeting for Irish businesses, circular economy and climate adaptation. By supporting research and the exchange of ideas, Deloitte’s DCU collaboration ensures that current and future leaders take actions that positively impact our shared planet.
