Lightning round with... Karen, SAP Consultant

Senior Consultant Karen explains the best bits about what the SAP team does

What does your role entail?

My role entails using both consulting skills and technical knowledge. I really enjoy the breadth and variety of activities I get to do daily. On my current project, I facilitate workshops, track progress of requirements and deliverables, and engage in detailed conversations with business and IT subject matter experts (SMEs) to design the future invoicing solution for my client.

Within Deloitte, I’m also involved in a client programme for the Consumer industry. I’m involved in a student project with a final year student in Trinity as well.

How did you start out in the Consulting industry and how have you developed since?

I joined Deloitte on the graduate programme, so I was in university before I joined. I applied because I wanted to work with multinational clients on big transformation projects. A lot of our clients are household names, and it is really interesting to get to work with them and understand their business. I have had many development opportunities since I joined, and have trained for certifications such as Scrum Master and Prince2. I have worked on projects both with multinational clients based in Ireland and on international projects with other Deloitte member firms.

What is the most interesting or challenging project you’ve worked on?

My favourite project that I’ve worked on so far was a strategy, roadmap and business case project for a multinational pharmaceutical company. We helped our client to decide its approach for a core business platform for the next 7 years and got to do a lot of research into industry trends as part of this.

How has the past year changed the way you and your team work?

A big change for me has been that I don’t travel abroad for work anymore. I used to spend most of my work week abroad as my client is based in the UK and Denmark, which I enjoyed, but frequent travel can also have some downsides. Our team has transitioned really well to working virtually and I hope that we can continue to work with a combination of virtual and real-life into the future. I miss seeing all my friends at work every day and do look forward to going back to the office.

Outside of being a techie at Deloitte, what can we typically find you doing?

My interests outside of work have been curtailed a lot lately! I really enjoy Pilates and have managed to keep it up with online classes, including a free online lunchtime class taught by one of my Deloitte colleagues. I live by the sea so have really enjoyed getting out for lunchtime seaside walks in my local park. I also have started doing more home cooking and baking again.
