My career journey: from the Defence Forces to Deloitte

Mark's career move to Cyber Risk Consulting

Mark is a Manager in our Cyber team in Risk Advisory. He joined as an experienced hire, having previously spent 21 years in the Irish Defence Forces. He told us a bit more about the work that he does, and the types of projects and training you can expect as an experienced professional at Deloitte.

Before joining Deloitte, I had been in the Irish Defence Forces for 21 years, but was looking for a new challenge. While in the Defence Forces I completed an MSc in Cyber-crime and Computer Forensics at UCD in 2017. The experience gained from the MSc together with practical hands on experience in the Defence Forces helped me pivot into my new role at Deloitte. I felt that Deloitte was a good fit from my first screening call. I had done a few interviews with other companies and didn't get the same feeling as I had from my Deloitte interview – from Senior Manager to Partner, everyone made it an easy decision to join.

New challenges for experienced professionals

Experienced hires will get a chance to work on engaging and challenging projects - I joined on a Monday and the next day was on a flight to the UK on an international assignment! I was placed on the project as the subject matter expert (SME) for network security. During this engagement, we worked with the client onsite in the UK to provide expert advice and guidance on how to secure their IT infrastructure.

After this, I started work on business continuity planning for our clients in the current environment. I am also part of the leadership team for our Cloud training program and our Cyber Incident Response capability, which we are rolling out to the trainees on the Cyber team.

I am currently seconded into a multinational tech company as part of their information security programme - this role is both challenging and a great experience.

From my first day in Deloitte it has been a very welcoming and inclusive environment to work in. Initially I was apprehensive after spending 21 years in my previous job, but the whole Risk Advisory team are very helpful and have been great at making me feel part of the team.

Keeping your Cyber skills sharp

Cyber-security is constantly evolving and there is always new and interesting things to learn. There is a lot of variety in the role and plenty of scope to upskill at Deloitte. Since joining, I have developed new skills through both on-the-job learning as well as training courses, and have been introduced to new technologies that I would not have had the chance to use or upskill on otherwise. There has also been great exposure to new ways of managing and coaching people through our SPARK performance management system.

If you’re thinking of joining

If you’re interviewing at Deloitte, I’d recommend that you just be yourself and relax. You are going to be talking about yourself and your experience, and nobody knows that info better than you. Don't be afraid to ask questions about the role or the company.

If you’re a new joiner, the whole Cyber team are very friendly and welcoming, and are a great help with any questions or advice you might need.
