Exports account for one quarter of total sales of companies shortlisted for 2018 Best Managed Companies Awards

59 companies, with total sales of €3bn, employing over 17,000 people shortlisted

Sunday 26 November 2017 – Export sales account for one quarter of the total sales of those shortlisted for Deloitte’s Best Managed Companies awards this year. These indigenous Irish companies have total sales of over €3bn and employ over 17,000 people around the country. The winners of this year’s awards, held in association with Bank of Ireland, will be announced in March 2018.

The companies are drawn from a range of industries, with the consumer & industrial products sector particularly well represented, accounting for over 50 per cent of total entrants. Technology-related companies account for approximately one quarter of the companies. Other sectors represented are life sciences and health care, energy, hospitality and real estate.

Anya Cummins, Partner, M&A Advisory, Deloitte commented:

“The companies shortlisted for our 10th annual awards include some of the most successful indigenous Irish companies in the market. Some have been in business for years, others are newer, but all have succeeded in driving their businesses forward through recent challenging years. There are new challenges on the horizon including the uncertainty around which Brexit scenario will transpire, which continues to linger in the public discourse. With our shortlisted companies deriving one quarter of their total sales from exports, this is a very pertinent issue for them, and highlights the importance of strong management teams.”

41% of the shortlisted companies are from Dublin, with 10% Cork-based. The remainder are drawn from 19 counties around Ireland.  These companies will compete to be part of the Best Managed network of Irish companies, built over 10 years of the programme.

Andrew Graham, Director, Bank of Ireland Corporate Banking said;

“This is the first year that we have supported the Deloitte Best Managed Companies programme and our coaches, who have provided mentoring to the companies, have been very impressed by the calibre of entrants from around the country. It’s encouraging to see standards such as these, and with the additional guidance and support of the Best Managed process, they will be even better positioned to thrive at home and abroad.”

Shortlisted companies work with coaches from Deloitte and Bank of Ireland, as they face an in-depth review by the judging panel of every aspect of their operations. Each must demonstrate how their organisation is meeting its strategic objectives and adding value to the business, while receiving invaluable, customised feedback. The judging panel, chaired by Frank Ryan, will consider a broad range of criteria including strategy, capability, commitment, financials and growth potential across all key functions of the business.
