The Deloitte Summer Internship Programme

Aoife Kelly, now a Consulting Analyst in Dublin, started out on the Deloitte Summer Internship programme. Hear about her experience and how it supported her in choosing to a Graduate role at Deloitte.
Why did you choose the Deloitte Summer Intern Programme?
I had heard from my lecturers and peers in college that getting a graduate role in consulting was extremely competitive but that completing an internship can help you get your foot in the door. I had a specific interest in business strategy and Deloitte was one of the few firms that was taking on interns in that space at the time.
Deloitte has always been highly recognized for its culture, and working with great people and looking forward to coming to work every day are a top priority for me. The compressed working weeks during the summer which allows you to finish at 2pm, may also have helped influence my decision!

What is the first day as a Summer Intern like?
On my first day I was lucky enough to be sent straight to client site where I was based for the whole summer. I was introduced to the team which was a mix of Deloitte consultants and client staff. I was briefed on the project I was working on, what my role would entail and Deloitte’s relationship with the client.
What was your day to day role like?
The great thing about consulting is that no two days are the same. I mostly acted as a support role to the project PMO (project management office) which included creating PowerPoint decks for meetings and workshops, taking minutes and doing research.
For 6 weeks during my internship I was sent on secondment. This meant I was sent to work directly for a client and reported directly to them. During my secondment I helped conduct meetings and workshops, collated data and created a tracker which would be used by the client to monitor its on-going regulatory requirements.
What training/induction did you receive?
At the start of the internship we had a week long induction. This included a lot of ice-breakers to get to know the other interns, talks about Deloitte, what would be expected of us and skills based training which we would using during the internship such as PowerPoint, Excel etc.
Every Friday morning we had talks from different parts of the business from senior management on their careers and the type of work they do. This was really interesting as we got to learn about other parts of the business which we would not have experienced in our own departments. We also had talks on the different qualifications available such as ACA, CIMA etc.
Do you have any tips for completing an application?
I would recommend giving yourself plenty of time to complete the application and to really plan out your answers to the questions. Make sure you do plenty of research into Deloitte, your chosen service line, what your role might entail and some of the skills and qualities of a consultant/ auditor etc. Try demonstrate this research through your CV and answers.
You want to show what makes you different from every other applicant and how you are best suited for the role. When answering the questions, make sure you clearly answer every part of it. Make sure your answers have a beginning, middle and an end, and try to think a bit outside the box as it will make you stand out.
Finally, have either a friend or family member look over your application to get some feedback and/ or to proof read it before you send it in.
Would you recommend the programme to a friend and why?
I would definitely recommend the Deloitte Summer Internship to a friend. It is the best way to gain an insight into what it’s like to work in a professional services firm. During the internship you also attend talks and learn about all the services Deloitte offers its clients rather than just focusing on the area you are working in. There are also plenty of social events during the summer to help you to get to know your department and fellow interns. It’s definitely not just all work and no play!
One of the benefits of returning to Deloitte as a graduate after completing the summer internship is that my team was already familiar with me and what I was capable of. As a result, I have got to work on some really interesting and challenging projects since walking in the door!
