Charles Warriner on working in Maximo and Ireland

"Being new to Deloitte, everything is different and new. I have been impressed by how rapidly we are growing and the goals we have set for ourselves. I find the initiative around the analyst intake amazing. I have never worked for an organization that works so hard to grow their employees. After being here for a few months you really understand that the Deloitte brand is about performance, reputation and taking care of our employees"

- Charles Warriner, Manager in Technology Consultancy

Why did you decide to move to Ireland?

In early 2017, my wife and I were looking for a new opportunity to incorporate the work that we do along with our love of travel to new places. We have visited several EU countries on our past holidays, including Ireland. A previous visit to Dublin and knowing the Deloitte reputation made responding to an online Maximo posting an easy decision. After a few months of interviews and paperwork, I accepted the position as a Maximo Senior Solutions Manager and we moved to Dublin from Florida in July.

How did your current role come about?

I have lived most of my life in the Titusvill/e, Florida area, which is an hour east of Orlando near the beach. I spent many years working at the NASA Kennedy Space Centre, supporting Space Shuttle missions as an instrumentation technician in my early days and later as a Software / Maximo Developer. In my previous US work experience, I also managed many Maximo projects at different locations, including a multi-site implementation of a Maximo software solution at McMurdo Station Antarctica, Christchurch New Zealand, and US sites. Having these experiences around the globe helped make it an easier transition to the Dublin Deloitte work group and our support to international customers.

The two questions I am frequently asked are “Why would you move from Florida to Ireland?” and “Do you have Irish heritage?”. In answer to the first, if we are only willing to live Florida-type weather, then we are going to miss much of what the world has to offer. Florida summers are very hot and long. We really enjoyed our Irish summer and are hoping our first Dublin winter will not be too bad. Ask me again in February. No, I do not have any known Irish heritage.

What is the best thing about living in Ireland?

The best thing about being in Ireland is how close everything is to us. Our Florida hometown is spread out and requires driving to any store or restaurant. Here in Dublin we are learning to navigate public transportation, setting up in a small apartment, and walking to most places. In many ways, living in the city centre has been a bigger adjustment than moving to a new country.

We are enjoying the city sights, restaurants, and pubs on our weekends. We have found Dublin to be a very friendly city and have made new friends from around the world. The close proximity to the Irish countryside, the UK, and mainland Europe have already provided us personal travel opportunities, including camping in Galway and Killarney on the long bank weekends.

I am looking forward to helping to expand the Deloitte Maximo CoE team and the new experiences 2018 will bring.
