Life at Deloitte

Life as an Actuarial Graduate Trainee

Conor Parle

Coming from a background in academia I found the transition to be rewarding and exciting, due to the high paced nature of the workplace.

Conor Parle – 2016 Graduate intake

I joined the actuarial team in Deloitte in September 2016 and I came into the position from a non-actuarial background, with a BA in Maths and Economics, and a research masters in statistics – meaning that a lot of the work was new to me – however there has been a high degree of guidance from the team, helping me along my path towards being a fully qualified actuary.

In my first few weeks, the projects I was put on were highly suited to my own personal strengths – with a great focus on data analytics, allowing me to apply prior knowledge to situations which were new to me – developing both new and existing skills. The work on a daily basis has been quite varied and I have already been involved in a number of different projects involving programming and data analytics.

One of the things which I enjoy the most so far is the flexibility – there is scope to solve problems in your own way. The actuarial team is highly responsive to new ideas being put forward, as well as new methods to tackle pre-existing problems. From day 1, I was encouraged to consider the challenges presented and propose my own solutions but I was also supported and guided so I could be confident my solutions were delivering what the project required.

Coming from a background in academia I found the transition to be rewarding and exciting, due to the high paced nature of the workplace. I have not started the actuarial exams yet but speaking to the other students, I am confident my numerical education will help me succeed and the team with support my progress.
