What did you study in college?

I studied Commerce with International Experience in NUI Galway.

Why did you choose the Deloitte Graduate Programme?

When I started researching potential employers in my final year of college, Deloitte immediately grabbed my attention. Their reputation among students as an employer has always been really strong. However, the main thing that drew me to Deloitte was the people. After speaking to some of the employees at the Graduate Recruitment Fair in NUI Galway, I was left with a very positive impression on life at Deloitte.

What did you find most challenging about the working world?

I think the most challenging thing about the working world is the responsibility you are given. You are expected to work hard every day to meet targets and you are responsible to ensure the job is completed. This can be a difficult adjustment from college life, but it also gives you an opportunity to excel in your department.

It has been amazing to have a group of experienced professionals who have been where I am now to talk to about my career aspirations and get their advice on how to achieve them.

How has Deloitte helped you build your career?

Deloitte has been so supportive both professionally and personally. Not only did they give me 12 weeks study leave for my CAP 2 Chartered Accountancy Exams, they also provide exam sessions for everyone sitting exams for that extra support. I have also gained invaluable experience by working with a large range of clients all over the West of Ireland.

Do you have any mentors and if so what is their value to you?

Within Deloitte, I look up to so many people that I work with. It has been amazing to have a group of experienced professionals who have been where I am now to talk to about my career aspirations and get their advice on how to achieve them. Within our open plan office in Galway, you are encouraged to ask questions and get feedback in order to develop a great working relationship with people at all levels.

What is the most valuable thing you have learned since you joined the workforce?

The most valuable thing I have learnt since joining Deloitte is that you have to take responsibility of your own career and development. There will always be someone to give advice if you need it so don’t be afraid to ask!

What’s one thing you wish you knew when you finished college?

One thing I wish I knew when I finished college is that no one knows everything when they start a new job. A large part of your graduate training is “on the job learning” and gaining experience working in different teams with different clients. The only way you’ll learn is by asking questions!
