Life at Deloitte
Laura Candon - Summer Intern in Audit and Assurance
In my opinion Deloitte is an excellent place to work for reasons both conventional and unconventional.
As an intern you are treated as any other member of staff, you are valued and given real work which is important and necessary. There is ample training provided to ensure you know what you are doing and you are not expected to have any prior knowledge of business acumen.
Seniors always stress their availability to help you should you have any difficulty with the tasks you have been given. There is an excellent support system in place with every intern being assigned a buddy and an appraiser to mentor and guide you through the programme. It is apparent from day one that Deloitte want you to get the most out of this internship.
In terms of the conventional reason Deloitte is a great place to work it is the fact it’s the leading professional services firm in the world which gives graduates the opportunity to complete training contracts and exams through the firm. There is also numerous opportunities to work in Deloitte offices all over the world and to train cross departmentally.
Each intern was assigned to a department and a particular team within that at the beginning of the internship. From then on they were treated as any other member of the team. The work of an intern was varied and interesting. This gave interns a broader understanding of the work of their team from one end to the other of the projects they worked on. Interns were always included in team coffee mornings and social events.
Every Friday insight sessions are arranged for interns to gain an understanding into the departments other than the one they are working in. A range of staff from each department from trainees up to partners addressed the interns and discussed their current job, the role of their team and their career path in getting to this point. This was an invaluable experience to learn about different departments and hear the various routes people took to get to where they are today.
The skills for life sessions were another workshop organised for interns by Human Resources. These classes provided interns with useful information and tips for getting ready for the workplace, covering everything from CV’s and interviews to finding a career path that's best suited you and setting career goals.
The biggest part of my answer to the question “Why Deloitte?” lies in attitude of employees. At every level of the organisation employees have a positive attitude of can do and willing to help.
It is obvious that everyone gets on well and enjoys their job and the time that they spend in the workplace. As I come to the end of my internship, I ask myself what it is I want out of a job in the future and the resounding answer is a job that I love. Whilst this is a simple answer, achieving it will not be as straight forward. Therefore I’m grateful to Deloitte for giving me the opportunity to witness what it means to love a job and make an impact!
