What did you study in college?
I studied Business in Ulster University Belfast
Why did you choose the Deloitte Graduate Programme?
There are a number of reason why I decided to choose the Deloitte Graduate Programme. I was fortunate enough to take part in the Summer Internship a year previous to joining, this experience was a real eye opener in terms of the role, the people culture and the opportunities.
There were three factors that were important to me when deciding what to do after university and I found that Deloitte ticked all the right boxes.
- The role would give me a chance to work alongside some of the best clients in the market and gain valuable experience.
- People make any organisation, I found the culture in Deloitte is a fantastic blend of different personalities and I was blown away by their approachability, candid nature and general craic.
- Opportunities for progression was always at the fore and with the clear career pathway in Deloitte I found that starting the graduate programme would provide plenty of opportunity to gain experience and move forward in my career.
What did you find most challenging about the working world?
I think the transition from student to professional life was definitely a challenge. There is obviously a big shift in the level of responsibility you have when you start working and this shift is personified when you come in to a workforce that performs at such a high level. The challenges and demands of the graduate role endeavours to push you out of your comfort zone and this provides a really unique learning environment. Responsibility is handed to you on day one and you are trusted to deliver whatever the task, while this might sound daunting there is always a helping hand in Deloitte if you find yourself stretched.
How has Deloitte helped you build your career?
Over the last two years working with leaders in the financial services sector in order to build out the best solution for their business has been a key development point for my career. In Deloitte there is such a wide range of high profile clients there are brilliant opportunities to work with the tech giants, the big banks and insurance companies. As a graduate you are given the opportunity to shape your career from the off set, leveraging off the in house trainings that are on-going and the ability to work in the area that find most interesting.
Do you have any mentors and if so what is their value to you?
Thankfully over the last 2 years of the graduate programme I have been able to recognize an area of Consulting where my interests lie - I have been given the opportunity to further develop my career in this space and have been able to reach out with a member of the senior leadership team who provides me with key insight and guidance in the Regulatory Execution space. Usually a quarterly catch up over a coffee to share experiences and to roadmap what the next steps for my own development in this area are. Within Deloitte there are so many knowledgeable people that have worked in many different industries, so to be able to engage and draw from their experience is incredibly valuable for your own development.

What is the most valuable thing you have learned since you joined the workforce?
One of the most important lessons I have learned since joining the workforce would be always speak your mind. Be it in a workshop with your client or in a meeting with senior staff when thinking out solutions, although you might be the most junior member in the room you bring a different perspective of the problem is. The culture in Deloitte drives the best solutions and people are always open to hearing new ideas.
What’s one thing you wish you knew when you finished college?
I wish I knew the implications of hitting “Reply All” on a firm wide email. Nothing worse than replying to the whole of Deloitte Ireland on your first week!
