Life at Deloitte

Why a career in Risk Advisory?

Michael Heaphy - Summer Intern in Risk Advisory, Internal Audit

“What exactly is risk?” is a question I’m often asked when I tell someone I’m in Deloitte’s Risk Advisory department in Limerick for the summer.

A year ago I wouldn’t have even been able to tell you what risk was as it wasn’t until I did a risk management module in my second year of college in UL that I discovered the area. I was immediately grasped by how interesting and wide-ranging risk is, which eventually lead me to choosing to major in Risk Management & Insurance.

A typical day in the risk advisory department is hard to describe because of the variety involved in it. That’s one of the things I most enjoy about risk, the variety. I could be out on site working with a local firm one day and the next I could be in the office working with a big multinational company. My main objectives as part of the risk advisory team are to identify risk, manage risk and advise on how to prepare for risk.

The work assigned to me is real, relevant work which gives me a sense of empowerment. I’m a far cry from the stereotypical intern doing the morning coffee run! This is imperative to me as I wanted a chance to test myself and also a chance to impress. I’m being given a real taste of what it’s like to work in a Big Four firm.

As I’m only new to this whole area of risk I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit apprehensive when joining Deloitte, the largest provider of risk advisory services. However my fears could not have been more unfounded as I received a warm welcome and was made to feel a valued member of the team right away. My training took it as if I knew nothing about risk and built my skills and knowledge from the bottom up. This was very reassuring as I was worried I would be expected to know everything upon joining. Deloitte are the Graduate Employer of the Year 2018 and they don’t leave any stone unturned when welcoming you into the company.

I was blown away by the friendliness of everyone in the office and the pleasant atmosphere. I was given a desk the very same any other employee (including senior managers) and was not treated as a temporary fixture. Equal treatment is hugely important in Deloitte and I got to experience that first hand. I was assigned a buddy who has helped me settle into the office and they’ve answered any queries I’ve had. My transition into the company was made very smooth thanks to the measures in place by Deloitte.

From my time here at Deloitte I would say the key to making the most of your internship is to be enthusiastic and have a willingness to work and learn. Deloitte is an ambitious company and so they want ambitious people. Don’t be afraid to ask questions as everyone from trainees to partners will do their utmost to help you and definitely don’t be afraid to speak up if you have any ideas as they want to see leaders at all levels. Deloitte offers a fantastic work environment with the very best people around you. This is a perfect recipe for helping you to realize your potential.
I feel this internship is also giving me a competitive edge over my classmates in college as I’m receiving real work experience and acquiring so much knowledge that I can use when I return to college in September.

Overall I would highly recommend a risk advisory internship with Deloitte as it will give you a real taste of what a job in risk may hold in the future. You also learn so many new skills and meet so many great people along the way!
