Life at Deloitte

Hear from...

Ross O'Donovan who has made the move back to Ireland

"The most enjoyable aspect of being back in Ireland is the opportunity to experience a real quality of life amongst family and friends while also being involved in some very interesting engagements. The recent uplift in domestic economic activity, despite the uncertainty of Brexit, has been very encouraging and results in a very demanding yet rewarding working environment. That said, people are very much encouraged to enjoy some down time outside of work to maintain that real work life balance"

- Ross O'Donovan, Assistant Manager in Corporate Finance, Cork

What made you decide to come back to Ireland?

Having previously worked in both Dublin and London, I took the decision to return to Cork as this was where I see my long term future.

What type work do you do?

Working within the Corporate Finance department in Cork, we provide a wide range of advisory services to Deloitte’s Munster-based clients including mergers & acquisitions, debt & capital financing, transaction services and company valuations. My role is to assist the Partners and senior members of staff throughout any engagement from origination through to completion while also co-ordinating work amongst the junior members of the team

What do you like most about your job?

The commercial nature of our work is particularly interesting whether it be understanding and advising senior management teams on their business objectives, considering alternative options conducive to value enhancement or having a general understanding of underlying market conditions. Corporate finance is very much an environment where staff are afforded the opportunity to develop their own skillset and directly influence career progression. Furthermore, I very much enjoy the project nature of our work where each engagement offers its own unique challenges, personalities and opportunities to work alongside and learn from both colleagues and clients.

What is the best thing about being back in Ireland?

The most enjoyable aspect of being back in Ireland is the opportunity to experience a real quality of life amongst family and friends while also being involved in some very interesting engagements. The recent uplift in domestic economic activity, despite the uncertainty of Brexit, has been very encouraging and results in a very demanding yet rewarding working environment. What do you enjoy about working in Deloitte?

As is the case with any professional services firm, the success of the company is very much dependent on the quality of its people. The culture within Deloitte allows for a smooth transition into a new working environment and an ability make an impact that matters immediately. The Deloitte Corporate Finance practice really does operate on an all-island basis with strong collaboration and interaction amongst the various offices and teams. This has afforded me an opportunity to continue working on engagements of significant scale while also developing professional relationships with colleagues across the firm.
