Life at Deloitte

A Day in the Life

Shane Fenton, Summer Intern in Audit & Assurance

Upon arriving in Dublin to begin my six week internship with Deloitte I was extremely nervous. I was afraid that it would be expected that I know all my stuff and that I would pick up everything that was said during the first week induction and technical audit training. However these concerns were quickly put to bed as I found out Deloitte in fact did not have any such expectations of the interns.

Now I know this is not what your typical week would have instore for you but it gives you an understanding of the lengths Deloitte go through in order to train and develop everybody’s skill sets even during a short internship such as six weeks.

Our first day and a half involved getting to know more about the brand of Deloitte, getting to know the other interns and other general tips and security information. We then started our technical training for whichever department you would be going into for the rest of the internship. So for me in the audit department, we were shown how to complete a call over and checklist and also taught some of the basics of the EMS tool. We needed to learn about these as they would contain the majority of work for us when we went ‘out on the floor’. We also attended Dublin zoo one evening for a team building event which was followed by some complementary food and drinks in The Jar on Camden Street.

Now I know this is not what your typical week would have instore for you but it gives you an understanding of the lengths Deloitte go through in order to train and develop everybody’s skill sets even during a short internship such as six weeks. But Deloitte do hold many other events and have many clubs and social gatherings run throughout the year with something for everyone to get involved in.

A more realistic vision of what a ‘typical’ week would have forthcoming for you is hard to describe. Apart from the obvious of being into the office for nine o’ clock every morning and being able to leave at two on a Friday during the summer months once you have the hours and work complete, thanks to the compressed working week initiative. This is because each week will vary. One week you may be out on a client site helping with some journal samples. The next you could be back in the office going through a call over of a company’s financial statements. You might also be placed in the DDC (the Deloitte Delivery Centre). Here you will be helping to chase up different banks for confirmation letters, and then tasked with filing them and updating the DDC database.

So in truth, even at the level of an intern in Deloitte you will find one week will not lead into the next and that the next week will be as challenging as the last. This is good as it gives you the opportunity to get a flavour of what it is like to work for a professional services company and to see whether the office life is for you or not.
