Life at Deloitte
"I really enjoy the international aspects of the role, the opportunities to travel and to interact with global colleagues"
1. What I like most about my role?
I enjoy getting to meet with different and interesting companies, getting to understand their businesses and helping them find solutions to issues they encounter. I also really enjoy the international aspects of the role, the opportunities to travel and to interact with global colleagues.
2. What attracted me to Deloitte?
When I went through the milk-round interviews and presentations by the various firms I liked the people that I met and felt it was a place that I would fit in. It seemed like a professional but friendly working environment and that has proved to be the case.
3. What I didn’t know but wish I knew before joining!
We have First Friday treats in the tax department at 11am the first Friday of every month!!
4. My day-to-day role
I advise a variety of multinationals and domestic Irish clients across a range of different industry sectors including technology, telecoms, life science, construction, retail, services and energy. This involves dealing with corporate tax compliance issues, providing ad-hoc consulting advice, and feeding in on any tax challenges that may arise (for example if a client is looking at buying another business or selling their own), managing client relationships. A large part of my time is also dedicated to non-client specific work such as training more junior staff, helping to build Deloitte’s profile in the market (and my own profile) and trying to win new clients.
5. How I have been able to make an impact in my role
A couple of years ago we joined our R&D tax credit practice with a small specialist firm, Leyton. One of my roles was to successfully integrate the existing Deloitte R&D team and the Leyton team and to help grow our service offering in that area.
6. What else I have been involved with since joining
I’ve been involved in various events over the years from department specific nights out at the races to firm tag rugby teams and the golf society. We also hold an annual IMPACT Day where we work with local charities.
7. Deloitte’s role in my longer term career goals
Having been with Deloitte for 14 years, I have grown with the firm and a number of mentors through the years have helped me develop not just the tax technical skills, which are a base requirement, but also the more important general business skills which are vital to become a trusted business advisor.
8. What I have enjoyed most
I spent 2 years leading the Irish tax desk in New York which was hugely enjoyable and an incredible experience.
