Life at Deloitte
What I like most about my role
I work as a Consultant within the Financial Services - Strategy and Operations Consulting team. Our team works together with retail banking, insurance and investment management clients to help solve their most complex strategic and operational challenges. The thing I like most about being a consultant is the constant challenge. Because projects can change frequently and vary in nature, the job of a consultant brings much variety to your working life. Every new project requires you to learn fast, quickly acquire new skills, cover unknown territory and become very competent in a certain area. You are therefore constantly self-improving and continually enhancing your knowledge. Also, because a consultant’s job is primarily concerned with achieving the objectives of an entire organisation, you get the opportunity to interact directly with and learn from the most senior people in your client’s organisation. This is another invaluable benefit that is unique to the career type that is consulting.
What attracted me to Deloitte
My journey with Deloitte began back in 2011 when I took part in the undergraduate programme known as the “Deloitte International Student Business Forum (ISBF)” – a business case competition which took place in Athens, Greece. That summer, I also participated in the Deloitte’s Internship programme situated in the Deloitte Dublin offices. It was during this time that I began to really appreciate what Deloitte has to offer. The one thing that stood out for me then and still stands out now is the quality of our people. I believe that in order to be the best that you can be, you need to surround yourself with the most qualified, driven and experienced people in your profession. This is certainly the case in Deloitte; where your colleagues are the experts in their field and are always willing to share knowledge and lessons learned with you in an informative and enthusiastic manner. The culture is also unique in that it is extremely welcoming and friendly. From partner to junior level, Deloitte cultivates a sense of community where the door is always open if you require guidance or advice. Finally, there are many opportunities to travel abroad, be it on a global secondment programme or as part of projects themselves.
What I didn’t know but wish I knew before applying!
Probably that the graduate recruitment process isn’t as daunting as I expected it to be! Deloitte encourage students from all disciplines and backgrounds to apply to their graduate recruitment programme. The application and interview process is designed so that you’re made feel as comfortable as possible.
My day-to-day role
The types of projects our team engages in vary in nature but primarily include the areas of Strategy Formulation, Regulatory Execution, Process Optimisation, Cost Reduction, Performance Management and Change Management. On a day-to-day basis, my responsibilities might include activities such as meeting with our client’s senior executives to understand their business requirements, conducting research and performing analysis, formulating a strategy to help reach our client’s goals, preparing project plans, managing and co-ordinating key-stakeholders and giving presentations back to the client on our team’s key findings.
How every person is encouraged to act as a leader
Because of our relatively flat structure in Deloitte, every person is encouraged to act as a leader in whatever way they can. Even though I’m one of the more junior members of my team, I’ve been given the responsibility to lead project work-streams on my own, give my opinion on important matters and be innovative and creative in the way I conduct my work. Breaking the mould is something that is valued. If you have the desire and ambition to lead and be innovative, this is wholly facilitated.
What else I have been involved with since joining
Deloitte organises a wide range of social events which ensure we have fun and celebrate our successes together. IMPACT Day for example, is a designated day upon which everyone rolls up their sleeves and gets stuck in to some much needed work for a selection of very deserving charities. Last Christmas, I also organised the Deloitte “Sing for Simon” initiative which involves Deloitte employees heading out to the streets of Dublin to carol sing for the homeless. In terms of social activities, there are far too many to name! Some examples of the activities I’ve been involved with include surf trips away, summer boat parties, summer barbeques, concerts, Christmas balls, wine-tasting evenings, team dinners and nights out. Simply put you’re never stuck for something to do on the social side!
What I have enjoyed most
Working with and learning from the best in the business, making life-long friends, getting a level of responsibility unattainable elsewhere.
