Life at Deloitte

Our people: Stephen Collis

Graduate in Consulting Technology

What did you study in college?

In 2012 I completed a degree in Natural Sciences where I specialised in Zoology. I returned to college after this to do a degree in Electronics and Computer Engineering, which I completed in May 2016.

With this graduate programme are you now working in the industry of your choice?

Yes, I’m part of Technology Consulting in Enterprise Applications where I’m working with SAP. During my college experience I have a keen interest in analytics, database management and coding which are advantageous when working with SAP.

What drew you to Deloitte when you were seeking a Graduate Programme?

While I was working on an internship I got the opportunity to meet my future colleagues from Deloitte who were working in the same project as myself. When I completed the internship and began my final year in college I decided based on what I heard about Deloitte from those I had gotten to know and the career I’d embark on; I knew it that working with Deloitte would be a great opportunity.

What expectations did you have before you began the programme?

From working with those already in Deloitte I had a good idea what to expect but I really knew I’d be entering a diverse, challenging and rewarding programme that would allow me to put into practice what I’d learned in college.

What were your first impressions and how easy did you find it to become integrated?

My first impressions of working with Deloitte matched what I’d expected. Everyone was very welcoming and there was always someone who was willing to help which made it very easy to become integrated.

Did the scope of your work change as the programme progressed?

As the programme progressed I was given new opportunities to test my new skills which I had learned during Analyst Induction and those I gain during the training course I attended. Each one allowed me to challenge myself and gain insights into new and exciting areas of technology.

Can you describe a typical day in your role?

Currently I’m working as part of a team implementing a new reporting solution for a client. My typical day on this project would be to gather requirements from the business for future system releases. This would involve attending meetings and workshops with colleagues from both Deloitte and Client site and after, using the information gathered to construct documentation to describe the requirements which will be used by developers to build the new system.

Another duty I have is performing testing on the developed system to ensure that all elements are working correctly and to ensure any issues are resolved. This involves going into the system and executing test scripts that run through the expected processes to ensure they are running correctly.

Overall my normal day allows me to use a variety of skills I’ve accumulated over my time in Deloitte and presents me with new challenges that I truly enjoy solving.

What about life outside of work?

When I’m not in working I enjoy running, cycling, scuba diving and catching up with friends. I also enjoy playing an odd game of tag Rugby.

Why should someone apply to the Deloitte Graduate programme?

I’d really recommend the programme to anyone who enjoys facing new challenges, working as part of a team and willing to learn and develop new skills.
