In this series, we help you get to know them, their areas of expertise and why they’re passionate about the planet.

Up next on our 'Meet the Sustainability Team' series is Alessio Predieri - Climate and Sustainability Manager, nature defender and food lover

Biodiversity, climate change and social engagements

I am a manager within the Sustainability Team in Risk Advisory and have been with Deloitte for over 6 years (between South Africa and Ireland). My background is in environmental sciences, with a specific focus on the climate change and decarbonisation services. I have a passion for all biodiversity, climate change and social related engagements, striving to make a positive impact on the client and their interactions with the wider community and society.

Growing up in Johannesburg

I grew up in sunny Johannesburg, South Africa where all things nature was at my fingertips. Growing up in an Italian family, the culture instilled in me; was all about family, looking after one another and of course, food!

I was provided with many opportunities to engage with nature when I was younger, this included holidays to game reserves, class outings on safaris and later on in life being able to further study biodiversity and wildlife.

A combination of the culture instilled in me and the various opportunities to interact with nature and the surrounding communities has driven my passion and interest in all areas of sustainability.

Supporting clients in understanding sustainability opportunities

I work with clients across all sectors, specifically focusing on the energy, resources and industries, consumer and public sectors. I support clients in understanding their sustainability risks and opportunities and enable clients to mitigate and adapt to these specific sustainability issues. These issues could range from impacts of climate change, decarbonisation, consumer behaviour change, strategic alignment, addressing social issues and implementing or enhancing governance structures.

The environmental pillar is my main focus within the sustainability team; however I have experience within the social and governance pillars as well.

Making a community impact

During my sustainability career, there has been two specific career highlights that have stood out for me.

The first relating to my involvement in a social engagement which focused on providing sustainable water solutions to a rural community within Limpopo, South Africa. The engagement was fulfilling in two aspects. Firstly, being able to see the immediate impact on the community by providing access to clean and sustainable water, and the second, being part of an engagement that was focused on supporting and uplifting a community, enabling a future for all.

The second career highlight was more on a personal level and included providing specialist expertise (air quality and waste management) towards the Earthshot prize (a prestigious global environment prize). The prize aims to turn the current pessimism surrounding environmental issues into optimism, by highlighting the ability of human ingenuity to bring about change, and inspiring collective action. It was an honour to be part of the process.

Inspired by family values

As indicated throughout, the source of my inspiration relates primarily to my family upbringing; the culture instilled in me to support one another and look after your neighbour. This is an important aspect in how we view the world and the urgent need to collaborate and come together to be able to provide a better future.

The next source of inspiration is the various opportunities I have encountered throughout my life. I have been privileged to be able to experience the raw beauty of nature and the camaraderie of communities to help one another overcome these looming changes. I have been privileged to travel throughout the world, experiencing different cultures and landscapes, verifying that these sustainability issues do not discriminate.

My final source of inspiration is knowing the impact that one person can make. We all have a role to play, and it is vital to hear everyone’s voice in driving the change that is required.

Alessio's vision for the future?

My vision for the future is to help drive awareness on the sustainability topics, supporting the education and upskilling of all people and communities, shifting their behaviour to ensure that every thought or action has sustainability embedded at the forefront.

Creating a baseline level of awareness and education around sustainability will be the starting point in which we will be able to reduce the destruction of our natural habitats, create equality for all and protect a planet that can be appreciated by future generations.
