How to navigate trust in the digital age — a Deloitte perspective

By Sriraman Parthasarathy

Trust is critical for any relationship and even more so in business relationships, where commercial interest takes centre stage. Creating a trustworthy environment is a business requirement in today’s complex digital world. This trust must go beyond people and encompass processes, systems, platforms, etc. Building a reliable digital ecosystem becomes even more important when we have to live in a world filled with misinformation, fake news and deepfakes.

Awareness about online and security frauds

Technology has provided convenience to people and created new business opportunities. However, with the growth of digital transactions and data sharing, online and security fraud risk has increased. Not having sufficient knowledge and awareness about these risks makes businesses and consumers vulnerable. Instances of phishing attacks, identity theft and data breaches highlight the importance of vigilance and implementing robust security measures.

Educating stakeholders about common fraud tactics and promoting digital literacy can empower individuals to safeguard their personal information and make informed decisions online. Careful consideration is required while evaluating trust perceptions online, as the level of trust would vary due to cultural differences, societal norms and values. Trust is influenced by psychological aspects as well, such as cognitive and emotional factors, which need to be evaluated.

Trust and digital transformation go hand in hand

Trust is the key to success when corporates embark on a digital transformation journey to reach wider audiences and streamline operations. It forms the foundation upon which successful digital interactions, transactions and relationships are built.

Businesses must prioritise trust to maintain credibility and loyalty, even though digital transformation can take many forms, such as embracing AI and blockchain, building e-commerce platforms, delivering services through cloud computing or using big data analytics for personalised experiences. Data privacy and the need to protect data from potential security breaches are additional key aspects to consider. Data privacy should be at the core of every digital transformation.

Strategies and considerations for preserving Trust

As regulations related to building trust in the digital world evolve, businesses should be proactive and not fall behind. Trust has been the key to success for many traditional institutions globally for centuries, and it still matters in the contemporary digital era. Corporates must adopt proactive strategies and consider certain key aspects carefully, considering the compelling need to build and preserve trust in the digital space.

The first would be open communication of policies regarding data handling, privacy practices, ethical practices and security measures to build transparency and reassure stakeholders. The second would be compliance in terms of adherence to data protection regulations, such as the India Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and voluntary compliance with higher global standards. These are critical to ensuring legal compliance and enhancing trustworthiness. Third would be prioritising customer experience by offering secure, user-friendly interfaces and responsive customer support.

The fourth aspect would be sufficient investment and implementation of robust cybersecurity measures, including encryption, multi-factor authentication and regular security audits. These are needed in today’s world to protect against cyber threats. Companies must adopt a proactive approach to cyber security using the latest technologies and fostering a culture of security awareness among employees. While the need is extremely high in certain industries, such as financial institutions with secured payment gateways, it is equally critical for other industries as well.

The last and most important aspect would be continuous monitoring of the external signals from social media and other websites, blogs and microblogs where trust perceptions are formed and influenced. Needless to say, online customer reviews and ratings influence the purchase decisions of millions of potential customers. Hence, one cannot ignore such signals as perceptions and needs to deal with them effectively.

Need of the hour

There are numerous instances of flagship companies taking proactive measures to build trust in the digital space and scaling new heights. However, some companies did not pay attention to this key aspect and ultimately faced consequences. By building trust in all aspects, businesses not only safeguard their future but also reinforce their commitment to ethical practices, customer-centricity and remaining good corporate citizens. As corporations are based on society, it is imperative to build trust in the society in which they operate.
