Service tax has assumed significance in recent years as one of the major contributors to the Government exchequer. The law has expanded its reach to cover most transactions of services and now pervades all sectors of the economy. As the law has matured over the years, the enforcement has become stricter. Several provisions relating to offences and penalties have recently been introduced in the law which warrants a higher degree of attention towards compliance.
