Deloitte Tohmatsu Group to join the "EqualityActJapan" campaign, advocates for establishing LGBT Equality Act in Japan
Participation in the international campaign to empower a society free from discrimination based on gender identity and/or sexual orientation
TOKYO, JAPAN, 17 May 2021
Deloitte Tohmatsu Group (Takashi Nagata, Group CEO | Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) hereby declares an agreement to the campaign, “EqualityActJapan” calling for enactment of LGBT Equality Act in Japan, which is empowered by three organizations - Japan Alliance for LGBT Legislation, Human Rights Watch, and Athlete Ally.
In recent years, the importance of diversity has been widely recognized in Japan and understanding for LGBT and other sexual minorities is gradually spreading. On the other hand, discrimination and prejudice against sexual minorities, as well as bullying and unfair treatments are still existing. In October 2018, the Tokyo Metropolis adopted an anti-discrimination ordinance aimed at protecting sexual minorities based on the Olympic Charter. However, there is no legislation at the nation level, which results in disparity among different regions. Globally, more than 80 countries -including the nations in the EU and Canada, prohibit employment discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. Among the G7 countries, Japan is the only country that does not have a law prohibiting discrimination against sexual minorities.
Introduction of laws at the national level to protect people from discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation is essential to create a society in which everyone can live true to themselves. Deloitte Tohmatsu Group is working on LGBT+ initiatives as part of its D&I (Diversity & Inclusion) strategies, aiming to empower a more inclusive society in which all people can work and live with pride.
