Talent/Admissions Director

Background

On July 28, 2014, United States President Barack Obama announced the creation of four Regional Leadership Centers in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa as part of his Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Beginning in 2015, these Centers will improve the availability and quality of leadership training programs and professional development opportunities for young African leaders. Each will be run as a public-private partnership, capitalizing on the energy and dynamism of the private sector, the knowledge of African and American institutions, and the programmatic and educational resources of the U.S. Government. The Centers will focus on engaging young leaders from a wide range of organizations and backgrounds and with a diversity of experiences. The Regional Leadership Centers will:

  • Provide Quality Leadership Training: Centers will provide both long and short courses on leadership and issues across multiple sectors.
  • Support Entrepreneurship: Centers will provide entrepreneurship support services, including mentoring, technology, and access to capital.
  • Enhance Professional Networking: Centers will offer young leaders the opportunity to connect with each other, American professionals, and experts from across the region.

Deloitte, in partnership with a diverse group of private sector, public sector and NGO partners, has signed an MOU with USAID to develop and implement the Young Africa Leaders Regional Leadership Center for East Africa (RLC), to be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Talent/Admissions Director

The Talent/Admissions (T/A) Director must thrive in a sales-like environment, setting and meting goals defined by diversity of talent attending the RLC. S/he has experience with admissions, with a touch of sales and marketing, who oversees all aspects of talent/admissions recruitment for the RLC. S/he develops and implements all admissions goals and strategy, working closely with the RLC leadership to create a marketing campaign that relays the RLC's mission to prospective participants. In addition to marketing the RLC to the external community, s/he establishes admissions policies and ensures each class or cohort is complemented by the appropriate number of diverse, talented participants.


The T/A Director, and his/her staff, represents the RLC in a variety of settings off campus and must make decisions to conduct oneself appropriately and responsibly, provide accurate information about the RLC, financial aid, admissions and program tracks to the public, as well as give recommendations to and counsel prospective students.


As with all RLC positions, it is expected that mission, core values and vision are exemplified by the individual filling this role.

Responsibilities
  • Will report to the RLC’s COP/Managing Director.
  • Directs and coordinates admissions program, according to RLC policies developed by governing board. 
  • Lead the development of a recruitment database and application process taking into consideration internet accessibility and desire for participants from diverse walks of life, socio-economic backgrounds, nationalities, abilities, etc. 
  • Directs preparation of marketing material in various formats – print, video, in-person, blogs, pod-casts, etc. explaining the purpose of the RLC and its admission processes.
  • Confers with other programs, schools, public and private sectors to explain program, build interest, and clarify admission procedures. 
  • Counsels and reviews on exceptional admissions cases. 
  • Recruit and hire team members for the talent/admissions department, and oversee their continued professional development and growth.
  • Will serve on policy making talent/admissions committee or equivalent.
  • Participate in or conduct student recruitment programs with other members of faculty and staff.
  • Oversee and balance the budget for T/A 
  • Supervise T/A staff as appropriate 
  • Prepares monthly development reports, and minutes

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required (graduate degree preferred) in education, human resources or related field, and at least 8 years of experience in similar role, with demonstrated accomplishments. At least 2 years’ experience managing or supervising others. Preferably at least 4 years of work in East Africa or sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively and courteously with colleagues throughout the RLC, other constituents and the public
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills are necessary to present and sell the RLC in variety of mediums
  • Demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build outreach, recruitment programs and activities
  • Extensive experience with recruitment database software.
  • Demonstrably strong writing, planning and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility and initiative, as well as the ability to work independently, combined with the skills for thriving in a team environment to achieve institutional goals.
  • High professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information.
  • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.
