Advancing the ASEAN Economic Community: The Digital Economy and the Free Flow of Data

Report Launch

In partnership with the US-ASEAN Business Council, Deloitte Southeast Asia releases its new publication, Advancing the ASEAN Economic Community: The Digital Economy and the Free Flow of Data, via a series of launch events across Southeast Asia in Singapore, Jakarta, Hanoi and Malaysia from December 2016 to January 2017.

The launch events were opened by Ambassador Michael Michalak, Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director, US-ASEAN Business Council and saw an encouraging turn out of senior representatives across industries, MNCs, SMEs and government and regulatory bodies.Jeff Pirie, AEC Agenda Leader, presented the key points of the report during the launch which was followed by a high level panel discussion on the opportunities, challenges and future actions needed to realize the full benefits of the digital economy in ASEAN.

DutchCham Singapore Seminar

The AEC: What are the opportunities for Dutch companies?

On 16 February 2016, Deloitte Singapore and the Dutch Chamber co-hosted a breakfast seminar for DutchCham members titled “AEC: What are the opportunities for Dutch companies?”. The event was officially opened by the Ambassador of the Netherlands, H.E. Jacques Werner followed by a series of presentations by a combination of Deloitte experts and external speakers covering topics that ranged from the regional macroeconomic outlook for the AEC for 2016 and detailed discussions on specific industries within the region, to in-depth analysis of 3 key ASEAN nations in relation to the AEC – Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

Understanding ASEAN: Perspectives from Singapore and the Philippines

Keynote session

Deloitte Singapore, led by SEA AEC leader, Jeff Pirie, hosted a keynote session on the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) at the Deloitte Singapore office, titled “Understanding ASEAN: Perspectives from Singapore and the Philippines” for the faculty participants of the ASEAN Faculty Development in International Business program, a joint program by the Institute for International Business at the University of Colorado Denver and the Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) program of the US Department of Education on 5th January 2016 at Deloitte Singapore.

The keynote session saw 4 of our Deloitte experts presenting on the AEC, sharing their perspectives on 4 key themes: the private sector, financial services industry, manufacturing industry and customs & trade.

Thailand: Gateway to the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)

Organized by Channel NewsAsia (CNA), the Thailand Business Insights 2015 event on 30 June addressed the implications of the launch of AEC on Thailand as well as the rest of the ASEAN economies, covering topics such as “Mapping the future  – Pillars of diversity” and “Thailand – Blueprint & Gateway for ASEAN”. Deloitte Thailand’s Country Managing Partner, Subhasakdi Krishnamra, was invited as a panel speaker for the discussion on “Thailand – Blueprint & Gateway for ASEAN” sharing the investment opportunities and trends amongst foreign firms with regards to the Thai economy.

Deloitte M&A Conference: Investing in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)

This year’s conference, having taken place on 29 October at the Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore, focused on what the AEC means for business and how market liberalization will affect the investment agenda across Southeast Asia. A combination of Deloitte experts and external guest speakers shared their perspectives on the implications of the AEC and ways that investors can best position themselves to leverage on the opportunities. The Economist South-East Asia Summit 2014: From neighborhood to community?

Organized by the Economist, the summit was held on 27 August at the Ritz-Carlton in Jakarta, Indonesia. It brought together leaders from across different sectors and industries to explore the rationale for Southeast Asian nations seeking a more integrated region. Deloitte Singapore Chairman and Deloitte Southeast Asia CEO, Chaly Mah, represented the firm as a panelist for the discussion on ‘Project 2015 – Towards economic community’ which centered on the AEC targeted to be formed by 2015.
