Looking into the future of financial services

For the seventh year in a row, the Horizon Conference will offer fresh perspectives on the future of the financial industry. Each year, the event brings together senior industry professionals and internationally renowned keynote speakers with a message to share. True to tradition, Luxembourg’s Minister of Finance Mr. Pierre Gramegna will deliver the opening speech also in the upcoming edition.

This 2017 Horizon Conference will cover the latest trends, unexpected challenges and innovation strategies. Led by our chairman of the day, Sébastien Danloy (CEO, RBC Investor Services Bank S.A.), thought leaders shaping the financial services and adjacent industries will provide valuable insights on hot topics such as the Blue Economy, exponential innovation and space exploration/mining.

Sébastien Danloy is the CEO of RBC Investor Services Bank S.A., Luxembourg. He also acts as Managing Director, Continental Europe & Offshore, Investor & Treasury Services.

He chairs both the Executive Committee of RBC Investor Services Bank S.A., Luxembourg and the Continental Europe & Offshore Operating Committee. He is also a member of the Operating Committee of RBC Investor & Treasury Services.

Pierre Gramegna

Luxembourg Minister of Finance

Pierre Gramegna joined the government as Minister of Finance in December 2013 in the coalition formed by the Democratic Party (DP), the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) and the Green Party (“déi gréng”).

A career diplomat, Minister Gramegna joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1983. He was subsequently appointed political and economic affairs advisor to the Luxembourg embassy in Paris in 1988, an office he held for four years before being appointed consul general and director of the Board of Economic Development in San Francisco. From 1996 to 2002, he was Luxembourg’s ambassador to Japan and South Korea. He was subsequently responsible for the Directorate of International Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2003, Minister Gramegna took up the position of director general of the Chamber of Commerce, an office he held until his appointment to the government in December 2013.

Prior to joining the government, Minister Gramegna was a member of the executive board of several companies, including in particular Cargolux Airlines International SA (as chairman from 2004 to 2008), the Luxembourg Stock Exchange (Bourse de Luxembourg), the National Credit and Investment Company (Société nationale de crédit et d’investissement), the Del Credere Office (Office du ducroire) , LuxExpo Luxembourg and BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg SA. He has also been a member of numerous advisory committees, such as the Tripartite Coordination Committee (Comité de coordination tripartite), the Economic and Social Committee of the Greater Region (Comité économique et social de la Grande Région), the Advisory Committee on Foreign Trade (Comité consultatif du commerce extérieur), the Economic Development Committee (Comité de développement économique) and the National Committee for the Promotion of Entrepreneurship (Comité national pour la promotion de l’esprit d’entreprise).

Prof Mark McCaughrean

Senior Advisor for Science & Exploration, European Space Agency

Prof Mark McCaughrean is the Senior Advisor for Science & Robotic Exploration at the European Space Agency. He is also responsible for communicating results from ESA’s astronomy, heliophysics, planetary, exploration, and fundamental physics missions to the scientific community and wider general public.

Following a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, he worked at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre, followed by astronomical institutes in Tucson, Heidelberg, Bonn, and Potsdam. Mark also taught as a professor of astrophysics at the University of Exeter before joining ESA in 2009. His personal scientific research involves observational studies of the formation of stars and their planetary systems. Mark is also an Interdisciplinary Scientist for the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope.

Charles van der Haegen is a founder and chief executive officer of a Brussels based non-profit association " Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives (ZERI) Europe: Foundation for a Blue Economy".

In 2012 he joined Gunter Pauli, his intimate friend since the early 80ies, to undertake what Machiavelli quoted as "the most difficult task to take in hand, the most perilous to conduct, and the most uncertain in its success: changing the order of things" on our old continent, Europe, confronted with the World's most inextricable entanglement of Technological-Institutional Lock-Ins.

Prior to founding ZERI Charles served as an executive in multinationals, as well as established a Management Buy In boutique.

His professional qualifications include combining new insights and past experiences to evolving business models, cooperation and organization forms able to contribute positively to the World at large.

At ZERI Charles partners with academics researchers and practitioners to apply technology and new governance systems to realign Human societies with Nature.

Charles holds a commercial engineering degree and a Master’s in Business Administration. He is fluent in Dutch, French and English.

He has been immersed in the Fintech and startup sector for the past six years. As an entrepreneur, Nasir has built multiple Fintech businesses across verticals. He has advised the boards of leading financial institutions, central banks and governments. Nasir is included in the “Top 40 innovators shaping the future of financial services -2014” by The Wall Street Journal/Financial News. Nasir has a BSc from the London School of Economics and is a Sloan Fellow from London Business School.
