Building Australia's resilience to natural disasters

Protecting lives and property is an enduring issue for all Australians and the opportunity remains to develop a national, long-term preventative approach to managing natural disasters and protecting our communities.

In 2012 alone, the total cost of natural disasters in Australia is estimated to have exceeded US$5.47 billion (AUD$6 billion), a figure that is expected to double by 2030. By investing in pre-disaster resilience, governments could save US$11 billion (AUD $12 billion) over the next four decades.
