Deloitte KidsEdu

Enabling the underserved community access to e-learning

On 10 June 2020, Deloitte Malaysia launched an e-learning initiative for KidsEdu children at Desa Mentari PPR.

Part of Deloitte global’s WorldClass initiative, Deloitte KidsEdu is a Deloitte Malaysia CSR programme initiated in June 2019. Its aim is to make education accessible to kids from low-income households. With more than 60 Deloitte volunteers, the programme conducts weekly English classes for kids within these communities. Since its inception a year ago, the programme has grown from one to three centres - Desa Mentari (Bandar Sunway). Sri Pantai (Kuala Lumpur), and MPKK Bukit Gelugor (Penang).

With the current global pandemic and ensuing lockdown, education in Malaysia has gone through a substantial shift, from physical learning to virtual classrooms at home. This has in turn disrupted the education of kids living in these underserved communities, as they have limited to no access to technology, such as computers and internet connection.

In light of this, a fund collection campaign raised more than RM60,000 with Deloitte Malaysia matching the contribution made by generous Deloittians. Through Yayasan Deloitte KassimChan, 100 brand new Lenovo tablets were purchased and distributed to kids in both Desa Mentari and Sri Pantai. Partnering with YTL Foundation, each tablet is also equipped with 40GB of Internet data, to facilitate e-learning. The Foundation also provided kids with free access to their online learning platform, FrogAsia. Through this platform, volunteers target to resume KidsEdu classes online beginning 1 July 2020, with the vision of further increasing outreach.
