This year's theme: From Waste to Taste
The continued growth in demand for food – quantitative and qualitative – is increasing the environmental footprint of the agricultural value chain and pushing it far beyond sustainable levels. Given the tremendous waste of food in the chain from the land to the brand, packaging has a key role to play, especially in the Western world where most waste occurs at the retailer and consumer. Reducing waste while preserving the taste of food is therefore a key area of innovation and collaboration for the players and stakeholders in the ecosystem. The challenge with this opportunity lies in the fact that packaging material, particularly plastics, is itself harmful waste if it ends up in landfills or oceans and is not re-used or recycled. Smart packaging that improves the functionality, sustainability, circularity of the solutions while being economic is the holy grail of the innovators in this ecosystem. This requires a holistic approach and concerted effort of the different actors in agriculture, (bio-)chemicals, food, retail and government taking into account trends such as urbanization, smaller households and digitalization.
We are inviting senior executives from established industry players as well as a select group of startups and scale-ups invited to share their strategic insights during this year’s event. Participants will range from the agricultural and chemicals industry, plastics producers and converters, food producers, packagers and retailers, incl. web-shops.

Agri meets Chemicals collaboration
Deloitte and Rabobank join forces to spark collaboration between the agriculture sector and chemical industry. In 2014, Deloitte published an in-depth analysis, sponsored by Rabobank among others, of the cost competitiveness of sugar from sugar beet in North West Europe. The study led to the Agri meets Chemicals 2014 event where 430 experts and executives that would not otherwise meet, came together from the Netherlands and neighboring countries.
The successful conference continued. In 2015, the Agri meets Chemicals conference gathered the agriculture and chemical ecosystem to explore possible ways forward to concrete investments. The aim of Agri meets Chemicals is to enable the group to make informed decisions, and take up the significant opportunities both sectors have to offer. Deloitte and Rabobank look forward to continue their Agri meets Chemicals partnership for the coming years.

Looking back: Agri meets Chemicals 2016
On November 1st, the worlds of agriculture and chemicals came together for the third edition of ‘Agri meets Chemicals’. In an insightful and engaging afternoon, experts from across Europe shared insight, debate and opportunity around commercial opportunities for bio-based materials, chemicals and brands. Hosted and led by Deloitte and Rabobank it also featured contributions from Lego, BASF, Cargill, AkzoNobel, the Port of Rotterdam, Royal FrieslandCampina and more.
A big focus was on how economics, technology and customer demand for sustainable solutions are driving the industry forward. But that financial obstacles, feed stock and supply chain challenges were still barriers to success. And that co-operation across sectors, industries and nations was more essential than ever.
