Docking the Amsterdam
Foundation 'VOC Ship Amsterdam' and the Deloitte Impact Foundation are taking steps to store a sunken VOC ship and transport it to the home port of Amsterdam. Project team member Hans Teuben, Director Deloitte Consulting, shares his story.
What makes ‘Docking the Amsterdam’ a challenging project from a consulting perspective?
“It’s a costly and challenging operation to salvage and transport the ship to Amsterdam in the safest way possible. There are many different stakeholders involved. For example, we work with organizations that build the construction that can transport the ship, and with others for lifting and transporting the ship to Amsterdam. But we are also in contact with the government about urban development and tourism and we keep close contact with different organizations in Hastings. In addition, we also closely collaborate with people in the world of museums and maritime. We make sure that all the stakeholders maintain to have a positive attitude. I think it’s great that Deloitte has all the right expertise to face the technical, financial and relational challenges.”
Hans, why did you engage with this project?
“The VOC ship will be salvaged and transported to the Netherlands, where it will be publicly displayed in the Experience Center. This center will give an insight into the history of Amsterdam, and how our capital city started growing as a result of the innovations in trade and the shipping industry.
Innovation is still an important topic for the Netherlands, especially in the transition to a digital economy and society. I believe it’s important to show this to a large audience and to trigger children for educational purposes, but also for them to become excited about this topic. For me, working on this project, I feel I can really contribute to this!
What I also like about working on ‘Docking the Amsterdam’ is that it give me the opportunity to get to know a lot of different people, both internally and externally.”
What is your personal highlight up until now?
“In 2016, a game was developed, together with Deloitte Digital and a start-up company to visualize the project. It was a close call if this side project would be financed on time, but luckily they were able to continue after which Deloitte could contribute to the project on a creative level. For me, it felt like we could really make a difference."
