UNLEASH - The story of Marta Tomczyk
Looking back at UNLEASH 2018
As part of Deloitte's global WorldClass initiative, Deloitte is collaborating with UNLEASH to bring together the brightest young minds to develop new solutions to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Read the story of one of our facilitators at UNLEASH 2018, Marta Tomczyk.
For the second year in a row, Deloitte was the lead innovation partner of UNLEASH 2018, which took place from May 30 until June 6 in Singapore. This annual summit brought together 1,000 inspiring young people from around the world to develop actionable solutions to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Deloitte sent a global team of facilitators to deliver a 5-day SDG Innovation lab for the participants. This lab took the participants from ideation through to action, and culminated in an award ceremony where a number of winning solutions were showcased and awarded funding or consultancy support to bring their SDG ambition to life.
During UNLEASH 2018, Marta Tomczyk, Consultant Deloitte Innovation, was a facilitator at the SDG 3 track Health & Well-Being.
Why were you interested in UNLEASH?
UNLEASH Innovation Lab attracted my attention for two main reasons. First of all, I work with innovation on a daily basis. Facilitating a human-centered innovation process for 1.000 talents from all over the world that gathered for a week to do good, seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity. And without a single doubt - it surely was!
Second of all, although we are not fully aware of that or we simply keep on being ignorant, we and our planet, are facing some serious challenges. And yes, it keeps on getting worse. The Lab’s ambition is therefore to find novel ways, ideas, processes and tools and push all of us towards achieving UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
What was your role at UNLEASH?
Deloitte facilitated the entire Innovation Lab, and was for the second consecutive year the lead innovation partner for UNLEASH. I feel lucky I was chosen as one of the 50 Deloitte facilitators from all over the world to help UNLEASH talents design and develop solutions to make an impact that truly matter. I led a room of approx. 25 talents in the Healthcare and Well-being track with the subtheme of Child Abuse and Maternal & Child Mortality. In my opinion, this was one of the most sensitive topics. My main responsibility was to guide and support teams throughout the innovation process. From problem framing, through ideation to prototyping and testing; I helped teams to make sure their solutions are desirable, feasible and viable.
What impact did UNLEASH have on you?
UNLEASH had a big impact on both my professional and personal life. Personally, I returned with new questions, ambitions, ideas and hopefully life-long friendships. Also, UNLEASH provided me with the firm belief that the talent needed to save this planet exist. Our responsibility though is to make a proper use of it. As a consequence, although it might sound a bit cheesy, I am now full of hope that collectively we are able to make a true and better change.
Professionally, I learned that bringing together intrinsically motivated people from different cultures, with different backgrounds, passions and skillsets but with the hearts in the right place can make magic happen. It is crucial though to respect these differences, act on them, and see them as core assets.
Finally, based on what I experienced, I see that the semantics of the word leadership in the near future will be merely focused on strong personalities with a big chunk of the love factor. It is, however, a responsibility of every single one of us to care and to invest in making changes for a better world! My new mission is to keep encouraging others to jump on the bandwagon of this new, beautiful and truly impactful movement.
