Employment solutions unboxed

Employment Solutions Unboxed is a concept which demonstrates Deloitte’s innovative public sector solutions and which encourages and enables dialogue about re-imagining the public sector. It was developed during the EMEA GovLab training 2017 in Rotterdam in The Netherlands by our Social Services team. Let us tell you more about it.

Conor, Kosar, George and Farshida are from different countries, speak different languages and are unemployed for different reasons however, they all have one thing in common; they have all been helped by Deloitte's innovative work with clients. Unemployment is a global issue which impacts both society as a whole, and the lives of those who are affected by it. We believe that by working together on leading edge solutions, we can improve the lives of others. 

Build the box yourself

Conor graduated from university and found it really difficult to secure a job that matched his skillset. Being unemployed made Conor feel un-empowered, and as though he had little control over his life. Deloitte worked with the Department of Social Protection in Ireland to really understand the citizen’s experience and developed an online portal which helped unemployed people find a route back to work. Putting Conor in control of the situation and providing him with information helped him to focus on his job search.

Kosar arrived in the U.K. as a refugee from Iran and didn’t have the required skills to look for a job. He wanted to contribute but didn’t know how. He attended a workshop delivered through Deloitte’s One Million Futures programme which aims to help one million people get to where they want to be by overcoming barriers to education and employment, and giving individuals the skills and opportunities to succeed. The workshops helped Kosar find work as an interpreter.

After 20 years working at a local newspaper, George lost his job when the business downsized. He felt demoralised about being out of work and thought it would be impossible to find a new job at his age. Deloitte, together with the USA’s New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions developed nudging techniques and behavioural insights to motivate people to find work. By putting his goals in writing and through receiving reminders, George was able to get back to work within six months.

Farshida had been a stay at home mother for almost 10 years. When she decided to return to work, she found it difficult to re-enter the workforce. Through the use of social impact bonds and by developing new partnerships, Deloitte and Werkplaats Rotterdam South in the Netherlands helped Farshida and many others like her back to employment.
