Older is better!
Engaging retirees for social benefit
Much of the talk about retirement is framed as a crisis: too many retirees, too few people of working age, and not enough tax revenue to fund retirement. But what if we stopped seeing retirement as a drain and looked at the opportunity?
The new generation of retirees is modern, resourceful and full of experience. We think that by engaging these resourceful retirees with government, each other and the wider community, we can give society the chance to solve its problems – big and small – in creative ways. The time, experience, and ideas that new retirees have are worth far more than their tax payments ever could be.
Impact never retires
In “Impact never retires”, we look at the opportunity that exists for local and city governments to engage “resourceful retirees” to contribute to social projects across the community, providing resources and ideas to civil government and their communities to achieve projects for societal benefit that may not otherwise happen. Our comic book takes you on a journey with Bob, a resourceful retiree, and Julie, a city government employee, as they discover how retirees could make an impact in their communities. By connecting early with future retirees, enabling action from this group, and by fueling motivation through reward and recognition, local and city administrations can engage this retiree group.
“Impact never retires” is the first of GovLab’s “Crazy Ideas” series. We’ve set out a range of wild ideas of what the future could be. You might think some are crazy – but that’s the point! Every great solution starts as a bold idea. We want to get you thinking and, more importantly, talking, about innovative ways to solve big challenges. We believe great things happen when people connect and talk about ideas.
So, take a trip with Bob and Julie and see where it takes you! Tell us what you think about our crazy ideas, or share your own. Write a postcard, tweet your thoughts, or pick up the phone. We can’t wait to start the conversation with you.
