Life at Deloitte
Emma Compton, Deloitte Dublin
I grew up in Auckland and went to Waikato University to gain a Bachelor of Business Analysis majoring in Accounting. I worked in the Auckland Deloitte office in the Audit team.
I went on short term secondment to Dublin, Ireland office within their Financial Services team running large audits.
What are you doing?
I went to work in the Dublin, Ireland office. I worked in the Financial Services team running a larger audited for an Investment Fund. This was different and interesting as we do not have many financial services jobs in our Auckland office.
How long have you been away / how long did you go away for?
I was away for 4 months (Jan 2016 – April 2016).
Why did you choose to go there?
I have family in Ireland and I grew up doing competitive Irish dancing so was actively involved in the Irish Community. I was always interested in spending some time living and working in Ireland so loved that I got to do this with Deloitte.
What’s your favourite part about living and working overseas?
The people! Everyone was so lovely and interesting and funny. I learnt a lot from working with some really smart and talented people in the Dublin office. I loved spending time with my family in Ireland and being able to travel to a large number of places easily.
What’s the most challenging part of working abroad?
Coming into a new work environment and service line with new team members and to hit the ground running with a large job.
What advice would you give to someone considering working overseas with Deloitte?
Make the most of it and learn as much as you can while you are over there. And make time to do a lot of fun trips and activities.
