Economic effects of Airbnb in Australia

Analysing consumer benefits and economic contribution

Deloitte Access Economics has analysed the economic effects of Airbnb in Australia.

Airbnb engaged Deloitte Access Economics to assess the economic effects of Airbnb in Australia. This report aims to quantify the economic contribution of Airbnb guest spending to the Australian economy, and evaluate the economic benefits enjoyed by guests, hosts and the wider community. Airbnb guests made a total contribution to Australia’s GDP of $1.6 billion in 2015-16, supporting over 14,000 jobs in addition to the activities of hosts.

In additional to the national report, state specific research examines the economic impacts of Airbnb on state economies, estimating the contribution of guest spending, the economic benefits received by guests, and the income earned by hosts. By adding to both the volume and variety of guest accommodation, we find that there are a number of benefits for guests, hosts, and the tourism industry.
