Hear from our leaders

When I was working in Silicon Valley, the smartest people I met were either consultants or former consultants. They knew what they were doing, and I wanted to be like them. I decided to become a consultant myself, in order to be that good.
Global supply chain challenges have shifted the spotlight to Penang, one of the worldwide hubs of the semiconductor industry. I’m excited to build our consulting practice here, especially since there’s a focus on an industry I know and love and have worked in for many years. It’s also an opportunity to build something new under the umbrella of Deloitte Southeast Asia.
My goal is to integrate the new Penang office into our established Malaysian, Southeast Asian and global Deloitte communities, while creating something special at a local level. For me, it’s about taking care of our people—making sure that they have opportunities to meet leaders and colleagues from across the globe, get the training they need, and grow to be successful within the firm and beyond. The culture, to me, is the most important thing.
We also organise programmes for fresh graduates, so we can teach them essential consulting skills like critical thinking, problem solving and project implementation. Consulting is unique because we’re not selling products; we’re selling the skills of our people. That’s why it’s important to us that our people develop their skills, become more capable, grow stronger. We do our best to take care of them so they enjoy working with us and have fun as well.
Deloitte is a wonderful company that gives its people a lot of opportunities to do things that they may not have known they could do. You can definitely learn, grow and accelerate your career here. You’ll also gain exposure to larger issues, deal with our clients’ strategic problems and help them navigate the uncertainty of today’s world. It’s a great opportunity for people who want a bigger picture of how business and the world works.

My role at the new Penang office is to help with recruitment, take part in campus events, and encourage young people to join us.
I’ve worked with Deloitte for 28 years. This job is enriching—I’m still learning, even at my level. No matter which offering you’re in, you’ll experience new technologies, new ways of working and new challenges. We are always learning new things to keep abreast with the latest trends and solutions available to help our clients solve complex problems. The variety of projects and constant learning keep things interesting.
What’s unique about Deloitte Consulting SEA is that it operates as a single unit across SEA. Our consultants work seamlessly and collaboratively across borders. We leverage our strengths and bring the best of our people and capabilities to clients across the region.
This career has also given me many opportunities to travel for work. I have travelled across Southeast Asia and to Japan, Korea, China, Australia and Canada. I’ve also had the opportunity to travel to Russia and South Africa for work. Our consultants worked from home because of COVID-19, but now that borders are opening up, I hope to see them having the opportunity to travel to work at clients’ offices and engage clients on a face-to-face basis.
It’s great when we get compliments from our clients. One example was with an oil and gas client. They gave very good feedback in interviews with our QA partners. They liked that we worked collaboratively with their teams to co-create solutions. When the project was faced with a challenge, we provided the client with options to address the challenge, which they greatly appreciated. The client mentioned to us that they have worked with a lot of consultants and their experience with Deloitte has been good.
If you ask me, I wouldn’t go anywhere else. My advice to new Analysts is that they will be joining the largest professional services firm in the world. We support fresh graduates and junior talents new to consulting with multiple initiatives, so they can learn and grow their career with us. You can’t go wrong with starting your career with Deloitte.
