Meet Barry Salzberg
A profile of the former Deloitte Global CEO
Salzberg assumed this position on 1 June 2011. As former Deloitte Global CEO, he led and managed the Executive committee and set the strategic direction of the Deloitte global network. The global network comprises 47 member firms operating in 150 countries, with approximately 210,000 people worldwide. Salzberg is a member of the DTTL Board of Directors and Executive committee.
Prior to this role, Salzberg served as Chief Executive Officer of Deloitte LLP (United States) from 2007 to 2011, and as the U.S. Managing Partner from 2003 to 2007. During his time as CEO of Deloitte LLP, he was a member of the U.S. Board of Directors, the DTTL Executive committee, the DTTL Board of Directors, and served as the Americas Regional Managing Partner. Salzberg joined the Deloitte organization in 1977 and was admitted as partner of the Deloitte U.S. member firm in 1985. He has since built an impressive record through a variety of leadership roles.
In his earlier career, Salzberg was a lead client service partner and tax partner of the Deloitte U.S. member firm and became an acknowledged authority in the areas of personal tax and partnership tax matters. In this role, he directly served the CXOs of many large clients, helping them with their personal tax and financial planning needs, as well as partnerships and corporations, mostly law firms or merger and acquisition specialists.
Salzberg is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the New York County Lawyers’ Association. He is a member of a number of business organizations such as the Japan Society, BritishAmerican Business International Advisory Board, the United States Council for International Business, and is a board member of New Profit, Inc. He was previously a board member of the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, the Business Roundtable and the Center for Audit Quality.
Known in the marketplace for his commitment to education and fostering diversity within the workplace, Salzberg previously served as Chairman of the Board of College Summit, Chairman of the United Way Worldwide Board of Trustees, and is a chair emeritus of the YMCA of Greater New York. He is a regular contributor to the LinkedIn Influencers blog, writing about topics such as leadership, career development and education.
Salzberg will retire from DTTL at the end of its fiscal year (31 May 2015). Upon retirement, he will become a member of the full-time faculty of Columbia Business School as a professor of professional practice. Salzberg also plans to join one or two public company boards. In Spring 2015 he will teach an immersion seminar at Columbia focusing on the management consulting industry.
Salzberg received his undergraduate degree in accounting from Brooklyn College, his LLM in taxation from the New York University School of Law, and his JD from Brooklyn Law School. He was also awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and a Juris Doctor Honoris Causa from Brooklyn Law School.
