Summer Intern 2017, NTU
Being a Deloitte Student Ambassador, I was invited to various corporate events where I had the opportunity to network and interact with the staff from various departments, as well as other fellow ambassadors. The ongoing engagements allowed us to stay connected to the company even though we are still schooling. In August 2017, I was honoured to be given the chance to share my Deloitte experiences with my peers at the Tri-University Recruitment Fair (TURF).
My Deloitte internship experience
My 10-week Deloitte summer internship was challenging yet fulfilling. I was excited to intern in the Audit department and hoped to gain valuable insights into working as an auditor. It was intriguing to be assigned to work on engagements from different industries and witnessed how things came together through applying the concepts I learnt in school to the tasks on hand. My technical knowledge has also widened under the guidance of my nurturing seniors. One of the key takeaways from the internship would be soft skills such as cultivating interpersonal skills from interacting with different clients and learning how to be a better team player. The friendships forged with my fellow interns, colleagues and mentors were also my key takeaways from the internship. I am sure that the experiences gained will be beneficial for my goal of being a fullfledged auditor in the future.
Beyond work, my fellow interns and I were given the opportunity to attend several events such as the Audit Off-Peak Party, Eatz@Deloitte, Inter-Department games, monthly Mentor Outings and Mentor Appreciation Day. All these activities allow staff to unwind and have fun. The Audit Off-Peak Party at Zouk was amazing and memorable with the drinks, food, as well as the spectacular performance put up by my fellow interns. During one of the Mentor Outings, we went go-karting - an adrenaline rush during the ride is something that I will always remember. We also visited a Trampoline park during another Mentor Outing and we had the chance to bond with our mentor group over a scrumptious dinner.
Tips to all interns!
Are you starting your internship soon? My advice to future interns: fully maximise the few months you will have in Deloitte to gain invaluable experiences, insights, and new friendships! Don’t be afraid to ask and clarify your doubts with the seniors - it is always better to seek help than to proceed with uncertainties. Finally, be bold and seek new learning opportunities.
My secrets to success:
- Be consistent – life is a marathon, not a sprint. Never give up and you will eventually reach your goals.
- Think positive and don’t sweat the small stuff.
- Don’t be afraid to fail. Use it as a learning point instead to emerge stronger.
