Life at Deloitte

A global community of leaders

Deloitte Tax Analytics

Tax Analytics is disrupting traditional ways of delivering tax services, innovating, and creating opportunities for people to lead at every point in their careers.

“Collaborative” is how Danny Taggart, Global Employer Services Analytics leader describes the Tax Analytics culture at Deloitte. “Tax Analytics is a disruptive area, and we are disrupting traditional ways of delivering tax services,” says Taggart. “On projects, we team professionals with different skills—tax, data analysis, visualization, storytelling, and project management—to work together to deliver solutions that make an impact that matters for clients. Everyone has a voice. New ideas are heard, debated, and may be implemented—and people have opportunities to lead at every point in their careers.”

Deloitte serves four out of five Fortune Global 500® companies through a globally connected network of member firms in more than 150 countries. That creates opportunities for professionals to follow their ambitions and shape rewarding careers. Eight years ago, a degree in Business Mathematics and Informatics landed Hinke Visser, Manager, Deloitte Singapore, a job in the Netherland’s ERS Data Quality & Integrity practice. Her ambition to step out of her comfort zone led to international assignments in Shanghai and Singapore. That’s where she moved into her role as Alliance Manager working with the Data Analytics team to embed analytics across all Deloitte’s businesses, including tax. “International experience and mentors committed to my professional growth set me on the leadership path from the start of my career,” says Visser. “At Deloitte, if you let people know how you want to develop, there’s a way to learn and grow.”

Deloitte University is where leaders at every level thrive and ideas prosper. Professionals around the world may attend milestone programs as part of Deloitte University. Teh Keng Siong is a Tax Manager working with Hinke and the Data Analytics team in Singapore. With colleagues across Europe and Asia Pacific, he works to develop tax analytics solutions. “At the Global Indirect Tax Milestone program in Dubai, we met face-to-face,” says Keng Siong. “The program was focused on innovation, and we shared ideas and experiences and explored how we can better apply tax analytics to deliver value for clients.”

In Germany, Innovation Labs challenge people to go beyond their boundaries to turn great ideas into exceptional business solutions. “It’s better to be the disruptor than to be disrupted,” says Rainer Eismayr, Tax Director, Deloitte Germany, “and we are always seeking to innovate in Tax Analytics.” After a three-month assignment with Deloitte Belgium, Rainer emailed his partner in Germany about their Tax Management Consulting (TMC) practice. When TMC launched in Germany, the partner remembered Rainer’s email and interest, and he was on the TMC team from the beginning. The practice has grown along with Rainer’s career. He has been the tax lead for large cross-border engagements, developed the German Tax Data Warehouse, and is leading a TMC team of 14 tax and technology specialists in Munich.

Jens Schaeperclaus, a Tax Senior Manager, Deloitte Germany, works with Rainer to set the direction for Tax Analytics in Germany, grow the team, and solve client issues. “Tax Analytics is the interface between the law, IT, and processes,” says Schaeperclaus. “This is not old-school tax advisory. We work directly with clients to develop ideas—and we value not only tax experts, but also people who are good in math, science, the arts, and technology and interested in bringing ideas that set the path for our business.”

In 2002, Beth Mueller joined the Deloitte US tax practice, and in 2007, was named partner while out on parental leave. Although she comes from a tax background, she has had the opportunity to lead a strategy development project for one of the US tax practice’s growth priorities, is the Central Region Inclusion leader, and leads the US Tax Analytics practice. “The strategy for analytics in tax is to embed analytics across the breadth of our tax services. Bringing analytics to tax is relatively new for clients,” Mueller notes. “That creates opportunities to lead clients, people, and practices through change—to try new things and grow.”

Lorraine Cohen is a Deloitte US Tax Partner leading the Business Travel Analytics practice focusing on the Americas Region. “What I love about Deloitte is the ability to be an entrepreneur in a big organization. There’s a lot of freedom and independence to come up with ideas; some of my ideas are being executed worldwide, and that gives me a great sense of accomplishment. If you have the drive and determination to do something, you can make it happen here.”
