Electric vehicles and the Future of Mobility
Alternative fuels will play a large part in the future of mobility, and things are moving fast. Recently a number of countries (India, Norway and the Netherlands) have announced policies that spell the end of petrol and diesel cars in the next few decades and many more countries have policies and incentives to increase the uptake of electric vehicles. China, the world's biggest car market, plans to ban the production and sale of diesel and petrol cars and vans.
In Australia, governments have taken a back seat in this space which has resulted in a slower uptake of electric vehicles (EV) to date. However due to improvements in battery capacity and cost efficiencies, a corner seems to have been turned for an industry led transformation of the market, supported by governments across Australia and an increase in public interest. For example, car manufacturers such as Volvo have committed for all vehicles to go electric or hybrid by 2019. As costs become less of a barrier the benefits are clear: improved energy security, lower running costs, reduced noise, air quality improvements and health benefits. In order to incentivise EV use, the Australian institute has four recommendations:
- Exempt EV from luxury car tax
- Implement a bonus-malus scheme would offer a penalty for vehicle costs based on the vehicle’s fuel efficiency
- Offer grants for electric vehicle public charging stations
- Unrestricted bus and transit lane access, for a short time
Transport for NSW’s Draft Future Transport Strategy 2056 includes a vision for transport that is powered by alternative fuels, and calls for investigation of opportunities and challenges of EV use in NSW, and development of a strategic approach to EVs to maximise benefits for passenger and freight mobility, productivity and liveability of communities.
A key barrier to take up of EV is the presence of fast charging infrastructure, but in space progress is being made at a rapid pace. In Australia, the NRMA recently announced it will establish a fast charging network that will cover more than 95 per cent of NRMA Member road trips and includes the installation of over 40 charges which, according to the NRMA, is more than double the size of current NSW charging infrastructure.
The advances in EV technology and adoption are not happening in isolation, but are closely linked to Future
of Mobility developments. In Deloitte’s recent thought leadership on powering the future of mobility, we explore how a growing EV fleet could affect power and utility companies’ possible choices and examine how the emergence of a new mobility ecosystem could create a symbiotic relationship between EVs, autonomous vehicles, and ridesharing.

Unlocking the economic benefits of transport innovations (New Zealand)
Deloitte, working for Business New Zealand, NZ Ministry
of Transport and 15 other transport/logistics stakeholders in New Zealand are conducting research into the economic opportunities of ITS and the transport innovation sector in New Zealand. The research is focusing on the attractors for business growth in New Zealand, the barriers to this, role of government, best practice, priority areas and attempting to estimate the potential value of the industry to the New Zealand economy. The work will consider where in the Future of Mobility ecosystem New Zealand should be focusing and how opportunities can be unlocked with recommendations on the actions needed. Columbus discovers and implements smart city solutions
Columbus, Ohio, has positioned itself smartly for an autonomous future, taking a lead role in pilot projects on infrastructure and autonomous air and road transport. In a collaborative initiative that has taken up the name Smart Columbus, it set an ambitious vision “to be the model for connected cities of the future”
Working toward this vision will require coordinating and integrating delivery of a highly complex and interdependent set of projects in the City and the region. Funding will draw on up to $40 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation, $10 million from Vulcan Inc. and $500 million in local private pledges from partner organisations.
Deloitte was engaged by Smart Columbus to develop an implementation roadmap for the overall Smart Columbus initiative and three workstream charters for the prioritised workstreams.
Working directly with Smart Columbus over a period of eight weeks, Deloitte has been able to create a comprehensive, single view of the entire portfolio of Smart Columbus projects, both in-flight and for future consideration, enabling Smart Columbus to effectively take action against the integrated Smart Columbus Implementation Roadmap in a structured and organized manner, quickly identify interdependencies and collaborate with the appropriate stakeholders, and easily track overall progress of the initiative.
Deloitte also proposed the construct of a technical reference model, the Smart Columbus Operating System, underlying the Smart Columbus future state vision, which ties together single point technologies and solutions into a coherent, integrated system.
Powering the future of mobility
Analysts have long predicted that car and fleet owners would soon abandon traditional fossil-fuel-powered vehicles and go electric.
But after years of hype, promotion, and government incentives, electric vehicles (EVs) represent barely 1 percent of the market, both globally and in the United States. And yet the optimistic forecasts might turn out to have been only a bit early, with rapid EV adoption— finally—just around the bend. Consumers are increasingly opting for electric cars, as factors such as falling prices, increasing range, and appealing incentives combine with the “cool factor” created when exceptional design meets advanced technologies. On the horizon, the future of mobility—in particular car sharing, ridesharing, and autonomous vehicles—strongly complements EVs, further hastening adoption. Read the full article here.
The Australian Institute: If you build it, they will charge - Sparking Australia’s electric vehicle boom
Electric vehicles could dramatically reduce the impacts of Australia’s cars on emissions and the health of our cities. Yet sales of electric vehicles are low. Of the 1.1 million new cars Australians purchased in 2015, only 1,108 were electric vehicles (0.1 per cent of new vehicles sales). This compares unfavourably with the United States (0.7 per cent of new vehicle sales in 2015), France (1.4 per cent), and Norway (22.8 per cent). Read the full article here.
