The art and science of customers

This year's report focuses on the theme of "The art and science of customers," and considers the impact that living in the customer-driven economy is having on the shopping experience and retail industry business strategies.

The 20th annual Global Powers of Retailing identifies the 250 largest retailers around the world based on publicly available data for FY2015 (encompassing companies' fiscal years ended through June 2016), and analyses their performance across geographies, sectors, and channels. It also provides a look at the world's 50 biggest e-retailers and the 50 fastest-growing retailers.

Australian perspective

  • There are 39 of the top 250 global retailers operating in Australia – the same total number as last year
  • US based retailers make up nearly 50% of all the top 250 retailers currently operating in Australia – suggesting that future entrants of international retailers coming to our shores will be non-US based
  • The largest category of the top 250 retailers operating in Australia continues to be Apparel/Footwear at 36%
  • Amazon entered the top 10 of the largest 250 retailers in this year’s report – with seismic impact on local retailers and almost all categories and channels.

Global perspective

Slow economic growth in major developed economies, high levels of debt in emerging countries, deflation or low inflation in rich countries and a protectionist backlash against globalisation were among dynamics which contributed to a challenging economic environment for retailers. And yet people still need to shop, so the industry carries on. In some places and with some cohorts of shoppers, the outlook for retailers is favourable.

It also provides a look at the world's 50 biggest e-retailers.

The 18th annual Global Powers of Retailing identifies the 250 largest retailers around the world, and analyses their performance based on geographic region, product sector, e-commerce activity, and other factors. It also provides a look at the world's 50 biggest e-retailers. In addition, the report considers strategies retailers are taking to cope with disruptive change in the industry, provides an overview of the global economy and how it will impact the retail sector, and discusses "Q Ratio" which is a way of measuring non-tangible business assets.
