Meet Rishma Khatter, a Talent (HR) professional at Deloitte US-India Offices. “I view every little achievement in my career as a milestone that shapes my professional journey.” |
Q: Please share a bit about your background and early career.
A: I started my professional journey with a marketing startup as a content and social media manager. During my time there, I developed a keen interest in the HR activities of the organization and even had the opportunity to be part of the hiring team. This experience sparked my passion for Talent processes/HR and motivated me to pursue an MBA degree with a focus on Human Resources. Throughout my MBA program, I actively participated in internships, discussions, projects, and research papers related to HR. By the time I reached the final year, I was confident that I wanted to start my career in this field. I was fortunate enough to have my dream company provide placement opportunities at my university, which allowed me to embark on my desired career path.
Q: What are some of the key milestones in your career so far?
A: Every little achievement in your career has the potential to be a milestone that shapes your professional journey. At Deloitte US-India Offices, one of my memorable moments was receiving my first "Thank It Forward" shoutout from a stakeholder I support. This recognition validated my efforts and motivated me to excel further. Another pivotal moment was being appreciated by my leads for organizing an event. These experiences and many others have been instrumental in my growth and have equipped me with the confidence and skills to tackle new challenges.
Q: Who have been your mentors, and how have they influenced your career?
A: Mentorship has been a cornerstone of my career development. I have been fortunate to have mentors both within my family and my professional team. My aunt, who has been in the coaching and training field for over two decades, is a great inspiration and mentor to me. At Deloitte US-India Offices, my manager and senior manager have been amazing guides from day one. Networking is incredibly important in our industry as it opens doors to new opportunities, knowledge, and professional growth. For someone looking to find a mentor, I would advise being proactive in seeking out individuals who inspire you and align with your career interests. Building genuine relationships and being open to learning from others can lead to establishing and nurturing valuable mentorship connections.
Q: Why is this an exciting time to be in Talent/HR?
A: The Talent/HR industry like any other industry, is on the brink of transformation, with a strong emphasis on digital transformation, data analytics, and sustainability. Skills in technology, data science, and a deep understanding of emerging trends will be crucial. For someone starting out in this field today, I would advise focusing on continuous learning and adaptability. Building a strong foundation in both technical and soft skills, such as communication and problem-solving, will be invaluable. Networking and seeking mentorship can also provide guidance and open doors to new opportunities. Stay curious and keep an eye on industry trends to stay ahead.
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
A: Balancing professional and personal life is crucial for long-term success and happiness. For me, as a dog lover with two pets, spending time with them brings joy and relaxation. I also create digital illustrations, journal regularly, and attend at least one dance workshop a month. To stay rejuvenated, I practice yoga and work out daily. These activities boost my creativity, keep me calm, and help maintain an open mind. They have significantly influenced my personal growth, allowing me to bring a fresh perspective to my professional endeavors. I encourage you to find hobbies and activities that recharge you and bring balance to your life.
Q: What is the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever received?
A: The best piece of professional advice I’ve ever received is to stay curious and never stop learning. This mindset has helped me continuously grow and adapt in my career. For early talent or professionals new to their careers, my advice would be to seek out mentors, embrace challenges, and be proactive in building your network. Focus on developing both technical and soft skills, and always be open to feedback and learning opportunities. This approach can help you navigate and excel in your professional journey.
