From an analyst in the Independence Audits team to managing a team which assists in personal independence compliance, Hari Kallem reflects on his journey of professional growth, managing the team toward expansion. Alongside, the culture at Deloitte played an important role in the evolution of his career journey with the Risk & Brand Protection team at Deloitte US-India (USI) Offices.
My journey with Deloitte began in September 2008. Reflecting on my initial days, I recall the exceptional support I received during the onboarding process. I often say that the talent team was amazing. The first two days of induction were particularly memorable, setting a positive tone for my career at Deloitte. |
Early years at Deloitte
I started my stint at Deloitte in the Independence Audits team, where I worked for two years before moving to a new team focused on tracking professionals’ financial interests. I fondly reminisce about the first few years at Deloitte, drawing parallels between my own and the team’s growth. Over the years, my team has expanded multifold, and there is an increase in the scope of work. This growth has been both a challenge and a joy, as it has allowed me to take on some of the more complex and impactful projects.
Facing challenges
In 2017, with changes in professional independence requirements, it was critical for me to prepare my team in adapting to new regulatory requirements. This change necessitated educating all professionals about compliance requirements. I coordinated with my team to conduct webinars to ensure everyone was up to date with the new policies. These webinars were not just about imparting knowledge but also about fostering a culture of compliance and integrity within the team.
Evolving management style
Over the years, my management style has evolved, especially with the emergence of a new workforce comprising millennials and Gen Z. "Recognition matters." Through the experience of working with a multi-generational workforce, I have come to understand the importance of timely recognition and have adapted my approach to meet the diverse needs and preferences of my team members. I also stress the importance of taking care of team members, a principle that has guided me throughout my career. By understanding the expectations of different generations, I can say I’ve been able to create a more inclusive and supportive work environment.
Advice for aspiring professionals
For those aspiring to work in Risk & Brand Protection at Deloitte, our team’s work requires an understanding of financial instruments and capital markets, so having a background in finance is very helpful. I also emphasize the importance of integrity and an inclination toward working with regulations and policy compliance. These qualities are essential for navigating the complex and ever-changing landscape of risk management and brand protection.
Enabling well-being to recharge and thrive
Despite a demanding job, I maintain a healthy work-life balance. I spend my weekends with family and friends, often traveling to religious places. I ensure that the last three days of the year are spent with my family and friends outside of Hyderabad. This time away from work helps me recharge and maintain my focus and enthusiasm for my professional responsibilities.
What sets Deloitte apart
What sets Deloitte apart, in my opinion, is its people and the numerous learning opportunities it offers. We have many learning opportunities, whether through the various training programs available. Another standout feature is Deloitte's commitment to community service. I have had the privilege of managing the Counsellor thread as part of the Impact Day initiatives. These initiatives allow us to give back to the community and make a positive impact beyond our professional roles.
I accredit my growth journey at Deloitte to the organization's supportive culture, commitment to professional growth, and emphasis on community and integrity. I hope to inspire aspiring professionals and reflect on what makes life at Deloitte different. My story is a reminder that with the right support and opportunities, we can achieve great things both personally and professionally.
