Charlie shares her story of how she developed her career at Deloitte
Charlie McMillan shares her inspiration for joining us, and what she loves most about her job here. From being part of a great team to being out and about meeting clients, no two days are the same. Let’s hear her Deloitte story.
When did you join Deloitte and what is your role within the company?
I’m an Associate Director in the Indirect Tax team. I’m based in the Gatwick office and spend one or two days a week in our London office.
I joined Deloitte as a graduate in August 2009 and have always worked in Indirect Tax. This part of the firm advises businesses on all indirect tax matters, but mainly on VAT and Customs Duties.
My clients are predominately within the consumer business and travel sector and I lead the national Consumer Products sub-sector within Indirect Tax.
I advise on a variety of areas, including the VAT implications of changes within business (such as new supply chains, the launch of new products, corporate restructuring, entering new markets, mergers and acquisitions etc.), changes to VAT law and other indirect taxes, as well as day to day VAT compliance.
What made you pursue a career in your field and why did you apply to Deloitte?
I graduated from Durham University with a degree in business. I remember visiting various talks as I researched graduate roles and opportunities. I was instantly drawn to Deloitte - particularly the friendly nature of the team, the interesting and varied work, the client base, and the development opportunities.
In addition, Indirect Tax appealed to me for a number of reasons – predominately the work sounded intriguing. On top of that the role meant that I would regularly be out meeting with clients. I was told that no day would be the same. I wasn’t disappointed.
What do you like best about working for Deloitte?
The ability to work with a great team in a role where no day is the same. Where there are lots of opportunities to develop, and where I can spend time getting to know my clients and providing valued advice.
What are your interests outside of work?
In my spare time I enjoy running, tennis, and sailing. I also love to travel and have recently come back from a fantastic trip to South Africa. There is currently much debate in our house around where to head to for our next trip!
