Advice from Deloitte people: How to ace your assessment day

From application to assessment, bagging your dream job isn’t easy, but it also shouldn’t be a daunting experience. It’s a new challenge and an opportunity to show recruiters what you have to offer. If you have an assessment day coming up, don’t worry - read advice from people who have gone through it, and made a success of it.

  1. With the online application, take time to complete the initial application and ensure that your responses to competency specific questions describe the tasks you undertook and how you delivered value. Ensure that your CV is up to date and includes all experience no matter how necessary you think it is to the role you are applying for.
  2. Prepare for Psychometric tests by completing practice examples to understand the format and process before doing it for real. Find a quiet setting where you’ll be able to give full attention.
  3. When preparing for assessment centre, browse the Deloitte recruitment website to become familiar with the type of industries Deloitte play a role in, along with the type of work we deliver to our clients.

Don’t be afraid of asking questions on tasks you don’t understand.

  1. I went through the BrightStart application process whilst I was studying for my A Level exams. The way in which I managed my stress during this time was by ensuring that my school was kept informed about my Deloitte application. This meant they knew not to put too much pressure on me and to expect me to be off school for my assessment day and final interview.
  2. For both my assessment days I wore trousers, a shirt and a blazer. I think dressing formally for these occasions is important, as it will give the firm a good first impression of yourself.

  1. Use what’s in front of you, don’t try and do everything yourself, and definitely do not be afraid to ask for guidance or help. This applies to both in the recruitment process and in everyday life as a Deloitte employee. In preparation for your assessment day use the Deloitte website, anyone you know from Deloitte, and any other appropriate resources you can use.
  2. Deloitte massively promote internal support networks – every employee will be assigned a coach and/or a buddy. This makes it easy to talk to people for help and will help you a lot in progressing in your career.

Will Carter, Analyst, Consulting

  1. When completing assessment days, try and relax as much as possible. Speak slowly and clearly, ensuring you be yourself and let your personality be displayed!
  2. Research the firm and utilise some of these facts when completing the application process to show you have an interest in joining.
  3. Dress smart. You will feel more confident and also more professional, which will show in your body language.
