Claire Robb – Helping businesses flourish

Associate Director in Tax Claire Robb is always on the go. When she’s not busy advising businesses on their overseas tax obligations and helping them develop, she’s enjoying the rewards of parenthood to her 2 young children. She shares her experience with us.

How did you join Deloitte?

I joined Deloitte in 2006 as a graduate.  Prior to that, I studied psychology in Edinburgh and after university took some time out to travel and work in a ski resort in the Alps.

What are you responsible for in your role?

I work within corporate tax, so my main focus is advising groups of companies on their tax affairs. I work mostly with UK head-quartered businesses which have operations overseas, so part of my role is to advise them on their tax obligations as they expand into new territories – this involves working closely with the Deloitte network outside the UK.  I also help companies understand the implications of transactions - such as reorganisations, acquisitions and disposals - and how changes in legislation will impact them.  Aside from the delivery of client work, I have responsibilities around people and business development.

How are you supported to work flexibly?

Flexible working has been a huge benefit to me.  I have 2 young kids and have worked 4 days a week since returning to work after my first maternity leave.  On an informal basis, I tend to start work early and finish early so that I can pick up the kids from nursery and I also work from home occasionally.

What was your most memorable moment on the job so far?

There are many. The projects I find personally most rewarding are those which involve helping earlier stage companies to grow their businesses; working with clients such as those throughout the various stages of the life cycle is very satisfying

What do you like to do in your spare time?

With 2 kids under 4, spare time is an unfamiliar concept!  Outside of work, I spend as much time as possible with my husband and kids as I can.  I like to stay active and try to squeeze in a bit of running when I can.  I’m also looking forward to the kids being old enough for us to go on our first family ski trip.
