Getting ahead of her peers as a BrightStart in Technology

Rachel Hughes was interested in a career in Tech but wasn’t keen on taking the traditional university route, so she joined our BrightStart Scheme. She tells us about life at Deloitte and learning all about the world of Business.

When did you join Deloitte and what is your role within the company?

I joined Deloitte in September 2016 as a Test Analyst in Consulting. At the moment, I’m working on a cross-platform technology solution in Bath.

What made you pursue a career in your field and why did you apply to Deloitte?

When I left school after my A Levels, I knew I didn’t want to go down the generic university route. I am currently working towards a BSc in Business Technology at Ulster University through the BrightStart scheme. I attend University on a part–time basis, but 4 days a week I get to work on client site, gaining valuable experience and learning more and more about today’s technology.

What do you like best about working for Deloitte?

Deloitte really values their employees, no matter what grade you are. It’s really motivating to work in such a cultured and diverse firm, where there are no judgements. I’ve also built great friendships at my time here.

What are your interests outside of work?

I’m really interested in history, especially World War II, and love war films that depict this period. I also love driving and taking walks out in nature.

What are your top three reasons for joining the apprenticeship programme?

By joining the BrightStart programme I’ve gained valuable experience in a successful firm, which many of my peers don’t have. I can also obtain industry known qualifications such as BCS and ISTQUB. On top of all that, I’m gaining a degree in an up and coming sector.

How would you describe your apprenticeship?

During my career so far, I have made many relationships with people my age, and also older people, in a higher grade than myself. The scheme has allowed me to travel to different places, and work with many different types of people. I’m also gaining industry knowledge which I wouldn’t have gained had I gone down the traditional university route. Above all, the scheme has allowed me to mature and really understand what I would like to do with my career in later life.
